Coyotes Sign Goalie Aebischer

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Phoenix Coyotes signed goalie David Aebischer to a one-year contract on Thursday.

Aebischer, entering his seventh NHL season, has a 106-73-12 record with a 2.51 goals against average in 213 career games with Colorado and Montreal. In the 2003-04 season with Colorado, he went 32-19-9 with a 2.09 GAA.

The 29-year-old Swiss goalie was 13-12-3 with a 3.17 GAA in 32 appearances for Montreal last season. He was acquired by the Canadiens in a trade that sent Jose Theodore to Colorado a year ago.

New Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said the signing is a move toward depth at goalie. The only other goalie under contract with the Coyotes is Mikael Tellqvist.

The Coyotes signed two other players, neither of whom has NHL experience.

Defenseman David Schelmko signed a three-year, entry-level contract. Schelmko, 20, had eight goals and 50 assists last season with Medicine Hat of the Western Hockey League.

Right wing-defenseman Craig Weller signed a one-year deal. Weller, 26, was team captain for Hartford of the AHL last season. He had 11 goals and six assists.
