Most of you researchers are already familiar with Elizabeth Mills&8217; modern-day classic &8220;Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian&8221; &8212; and if you are not, you certainly should be!
This book has been heralded as the best single source for genealogical documentation since its publication in 1997. Its reissue earlier this year brought renewed sentiment that every genealogist should be &8220;required&8221; to own a copy. The importance of citing your sources &8212; and citing them properly &8212; cannot be overstated. &8220;Evidence!&8221; gives not only a reliable standard for the correct form of source citation but for sound analysis of evidence, too.
The big news now is that Ms. Mills is adding a second work, &8220;QuickSheet,&8221; to the research arsenal. &8220;QuickSheet&8221; is a guide for citing historical sources on the Internet.
Published in the form of a laminated folder, &8220;QuickSheet&8221; contains a series of sample citations showing the correct way to identify online sources such as databases, census images and digital books and articles.
Based on the premise that online sources are publications that have the same characteristics as printed publications, &8220;QuickSheet&8221; provides rules and models for common record types such as passenger lists, vital records and newspapers.
And since a Web site can be considered the online equivalent of a book, &8220;QuickSheet&8221; shows you how to cite author/creator/owner of a Web site, title of the Web site, place (URL), and date posted along with other pertinent details.
The format is convenient for desktop use at home or in the library and the lamination makes the four page folder a durable companion no matter where your research takes you. No longer will you be left with citation questions while wandering the Internet maze.
&8220;Evidence!&8221; is available for $16.95 from Genealogical Publishing Company from their new address at 3600 Clipper Mill Road, Suite 260, Baltimore, MD 21211 or by phone at 410-837-8271.
