woodville &8212; The Lady Wildcats of Wilkinson County breezed to a 51-27 victory over McComb Tuesday night behind 26 points from senior Kimberly Griffin.
&8220;She&8217;s our key. How she goes, we go,&8221; coach Edwin White said.
Griffin went well Tuesday, grabbing eight rebounds and playing aggressive defense at the top of her team&8217;s 1-2-2 trapping zone.
&8220;I felt great. We&8217;d lost to them twice, and we had to protect our house,&8221; Griffin said.
Wilkinson raced out to a 15-2 lead after one quarter, thanks to
eight points from Griffin and horrific shooting from the Lady Tigers. McComb coach Angelia Johnson substituted liberally throughout the quarter and the game, but nothing she tried could help her team find the basket.
&8220;We&8217;re still trying to find combinations that work &8230; but some nights you can&8217;t throw it in the ocean, and this was one of those nights.&8221;
When McComb (4-5) did score, it was able to use a full-court press to great effect, creating 12 first-half turnovers in keeping the game within reach at the half.
April Johnson&8217;s jumper before the break cut the margin to 22-10.
The game would have been much closer had McComb been able to do better than 0-for-12 from the line in the half.
They finished 6-for-20 on the night. The Lady Wildcats hit 12 out of 20 from the line. White said he was happy his team overcame the pressure.
&8220;We got rattled by the press, but we got through it,&8221; he said. &8220;This is a good game for us as we get ready for district.&8221;
Feisty point guard Ebony Anthony contributed six points and seven rebounds, diving for loose balls and providing the spark for the Lady Wildcats.
&8220;I&8217;m just trying to help my team get back to South State,&8221; she said.
Erica Lewis added nine points and four rebounds for Wilkinson (4-3), which faces Franklin County in its district opener next week.
