MONTEREY &8212; Cathedral senior Matthew Hall had the best game of his career as he scored a career-high 33 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Green Wave held on to defeat the Harrisonburg Bulldogs 54-49 Friday night.
The win gives Cathedral (4-2) a chance to win the Monterey High School Round Robin Basketball Tournament outright at 3-0 in tourney play with a win over Central of Jonesville, La., this afternoon. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
&8220;We played really good defense,&8221; Green Wave head coach Peter Arnold said. &8220;We switched from a 1-2-2 zone to a 2-3 zone. We then switched back to the 1-2-2 to keep them off balance.&8221;
Cathedral&8217;s defense did a good job of holding Elijah Boothe, Harrisonburg&8217;s leading scorer, in check throughout the game. Boothe finished with 11 points.
Cathedral needed all of Hall&8217;s 33 points as Harrisonburg mounted a furious rally late in the fourth quarter.
&8220;We had a 15-point lead with about three minutes to go,&8221; Arnold said. &8220;They turned up the defensive intensity. We had a lot of turnovers which led to some easy baskets.&8221;
But the one thing the Bulldogs couldn&8217;t do was stop Hall, who had his way down low against whoever was guarding him.
&8220;Offensively, we were real patient,&8221; Arnold said. &8220;We got the ball inside to Matthew. The guy just couldn&8217;t stop him. A solid, strong low-post performance. He couldn&8217;t have done it all without the guards feeding him the ball at the right time.&8221;
Another player who had a solid game for the Green Wave was Matt Goss, who also had a double-double with had 10 points and 11 rebounds. He also had four assists.
