ST. JOSEPH, La. &8212; Coming off a tough loss to Prairie View last Friday at the Riverfield Tournament, Tensas faced perennial Class A power Riverdale Tuesday night.
But the Lady Chiefs weren&8217;t intimidated or in awe of the Lady Rebels&8217; recent success. In fact, they relished the challenge of taking one of the best teams in all of the MPSA.
Tabitha Howard and Aubrey McEacharn combined to scored 12 of Tensas&8217;s 14 fourth-quarter points and the defense stepped up big time as the Lady Chiefs upset the Lady Rebels 41-32.
&8220;We knew they liked to take a lot of threes. We took them out of the three,&8221; Lady Chiefs head coach Chuck Bauerle said. &8220;We didn&8217;t shoot the ball well. But we played really well on defense. We wouldn&8217;t let them shoot the three.&8221;
Howard scored seven of her game-high 13 points and McEacharn had five of her 10 points as the Tensas, who led 27-26 after three quarters of play, outscored Riverdale 14-6 in the final quarter to put the game away.
How good was Tensas&8217; defense? No one for Riverdale scored in double figures.
&8220;We pulled away from them in the final four minutes. It was a good win,&8221; Bauerle said. &8220;(Tabitha) played really well. She had a good fourth quarter. Aubrey hit a three-pointer. Megan Bauerle had two assists on pretty plays. Kaitlyn (Emfinger) made two of four free throws. I wished she would have made all four, but we made a few free throws. Whitney Alford had some rebounds that kept us alive.&8221;
Tensas (9-3) took control of the game early and by the time the first quarter the Lady Chiefs had a surprising 15-4 lead. Then they went ice cold from the field in the second quarter and Riverdale (10-3) took advantage.
The Lady Rebels outscored the Lady Chiefs 10-2 in the second quarter to trail by just three points, 17-14, at halftime.
&8220;We really jumped on them, like we have a lot of teams, in the first (quarter),&8221; Bauerle said. &8220;For some reason in the second quarter we couldn&8217;t make a shot and we let them get back in the game.&8221;
Trinity 44, Bowling Green 37
FRANKLINTON, La. &8212; In a game that went back and forth, the Lady Saints outscored the Lady Buccaneers 12-5 in the fourth quarter to, oddly enough, win by seven points.
Mallory Archer led the Lady Saints (5-3, 1-0) with 20 points and Brandy Hall had 14 points. Courtney Bond led Bowling Green with 12 points.
Franklin Parish 73, Vidalia 28
VIDALIA, La. &8212; The Lady Patriots jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter of play and didn&8217;t allow the Lady Vikings to get out of the single digits until the third quarter.
Crystal Blunt led Franklin Parish with 15 points. Erica Brown led Vidalia (0-6) with 11 points.
Monterey 44, Georgetown 20
MONTEREY, La. &8212; Even though the Lady Wolves had no one score in double figures, their defense was a big force in this game as they held the Lady Bulldogs scoreless in the second quarter and to just one point in the third quarter.
Madison Simpson, Kassie Kennedy and Brittany Woodruff led the Lady Wolves (11-3) with eight points each.
Ferriday 67, Davidson 32
ST. JOSEPH, La. &8212; The Lady Trojans turned a five-point lead after one quarter of play into a double-digit lead at halftime and never looked back while their defense held the Lady Warriors to under double figures in all four quarters.
Kiawana McDowell led Ferriday (7-1) with a game-high 19 points and freshman center Jasmine Upchurch had 13 points. Kimberly Pollard led Davidson (1-6) with 16 points.
Harrisonburg 51, Block 45
HARRISONBURG, La. &8212; Jasmine Dunbar had a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds as the Lady Bulldogs used a 13-7 advantage in the third quarter to take an 11-point lead and held on for the win.
