Burn ban still on in Concordia Parish

vidalia &8212;Well, it rained Tuesday, but not nearly enough to make parish officials reconsider the burn ban they imposed at Monday&8217;s police jury meeting.

&8220;It&8217;ll soak in a little bit, but the ground will get most of it. In some places, the grass is six to eight inches thick and won&8217;t get it,&8221; Concordia Parish Fire District No. 2 Chief Nolen Cothren said.

Cothren said at least two to three inches would have to fall before he would consider advising the police jury to call off the ban, which forbids burning of any sort throughout the parish.

Anyone caught burning is subject to a court summons.

Jury President Melvin Ferrington said he would feel more comfortable after three to four inches, and the clear weather forecast until the weekend means the ban could be in place for some time.

&8220;Even if we get one and a half to two inches, if there&8217;s a wind behind it, it&8217;ll be gone overnight,&8221; he said.

Cothren said he has gotten some complaints, but the 80-acre fire Monday on the property of Big 10 Hunting Club

&8212; the most recent in a series of brush fires &8212; helped him make his case.

&8220;The fire was only about a mile or so from Ridgecrest and people there were scared they&8217;d have to evacuate,&8221; he said. &8220;I think most people will abide by it.&8221;

The Concordia Parish Fire District No. 2 sent three pump trucks to fight the blaze.

Three Rivers Farm Supply sent trucks with water trailers and the Ridgecrest Fire Department sent its truck.

What ultimately saved the day, Cothren said, were bulldozers sent by the Olla office of the Louisiana State Forestry Service and two more from Camo Construction, which helped firefighters cut the fire off before it jumped the road behind Ridgecrest.

Cothren estimated between 30 and 40 people worked to control the fire. The cause was unknown, but the verdict clear.

It&8217;s very dry.

&8220;It&8217;s got to be bad for us to put one (a burn ban) on,&8221; he said. &8220;We don&8217;t just put one on to put one on.&8221;
