Vidalia &8212; It&8217;s official.

&8220;Wal-Mart is ready to come to Vidalia,&8221; City Attorney Jack McLemore told aldermen Tuesday evening at their regular meeting.

Town officials have been in talks with Wal-Mart for several months to bring a Supercenter to Vidalia. The store would be located on land just east of Kaiser&8217;s Mobil on Carter Street.

Aldermen passed two resolutions Tuesday to make the deal easier. One simply allows town officials to enter a cooperative agreement with Wal-Mart on the deal.

The second resolution sets up a special utility rate schedule for businesses that employ more than 200 people and generate more than $600,000 in sales tax revenue inside the city limits.

&8220;We don&8217;t have any business that does that,&8221; McLemore said.

Aldermen also voted to pre-file an ordinance to ratify those two resolutions.

Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland said he has already heard interest from other businesses that might want to locate near Wal-Mart.

&8220;We&8217;re excited about it,&8221; he said.

Copeland said he thinks construction could begin on the 105,000 square foot store in February or March, with the opening sometime in the fall.

Wal-Mart officials, who could not be reached for comment late Tuesday, had earlier declined to confirm they were interested in building in Vidalia.
