BASTROP, La. &8212; After an emotional, hard-fought win over Riverfield on Senior Night Friday, the Adams Christian Lady Rebels needed to defeat a pretty good Prairie View team to clinch the No. 1 seed in the District 3-AA Tournament.
And thanks in large to a good first half on the offensive end and a tenacious defense, the Lady Rebels defeated the Lady Spartans 46-34 to claim the regular season district championship and the top seed in the district tournament.
&8220;That was their goal to start out the year. I was proud for our seniors to do that,&8221; Lady Rebels head coach John Gray said. &8220;Their other goal was to go real deep in the state tournament.&8221;
Mattie Geoghegan and Katie Ann Swinny led the Lady Rebels with 11 points each.
Any thoughts of Adams Christian (7-1, 20-5) being too pumped up for this game were erased early as the Lady Rebels took a 15-11 lead over Prairie View (3-4, 15-12) at the end of the first quarter.
While Adams Christian kept up the defensive intensity, its recent struggles on offense seemed to go away in the first half. The Lady Rebels scored 17 points in the second quarter for a 32-22 halftime lead.
However, the Lady Rebels were plagued with foul trouble and turnovers in the second half. And while they eventually won the game, afterwards Gray said he wasn&8217;t pleased with the effort on offense.
&8220;We still struggle on offense. We&8217;re getting in foul trouble. We decided to hold the ball and run the clock out (in the fourth quarter),&8221; Gray said. &8220;We had three people with four fouls. That&8217;s the reason we did that. They (Prairie View) didn&8217;t have the ball, so they couldn&8217;t score.&8221;
Trinity 37, Brookhaven Academy 23
BROOKHAVEN &8212; Thanks to five three-pointers during a 17-point second quarter and a solid defensive effort, the Lady Saints defeated the Lady Cougars at the John R. Gray Gym for the first time in 26 years, which head coach Melanie Hall was a senior at Trinity.
&8220;The girls played a beautiful game together,&8221; Hall said. &8220;Our defensive unit was probably the best it played as a team all season.&8221;
Trinity Episcopal (9-3, 17-8) turned an 8-7 lead after one quarter of play into a 25-12 lead at halftime and the Lady Saints were on their way to doing something very few teams have done over the last decade &8212; sweep the Lady Cougars (8-4, 21-10.)
&8220;Offensively, the team was very patient,&8221; Hall said. &8220;Made good decisions. We played hard. We played smart. And we had fun. That was a big game for us.&8221;
Trinity&8217;s defense kept the pressure on a young Brookhaven Academy team from the opening tip to the final buzzer. The Lady Cougars scored no more than seven points in any of the four quarters, something that hasn&8217;t happened to any Lady Cougars team in years.
With the win, Trinity Episcopal clinched the No. 2 seed in the District 4-AA Tournament. Columbia Academy nailed down the No. 1 seed after defeating Oak Forest Saturday night to finish 10-2 in district play. Trinity will play No. 7 seed Centreville in the first round.
Huntington 59, ASC 47
FERRIDAY &8212; Huntington (7-16) dominated the first and third quarters. The Lady Hounds took a 21-9 lead after one and out-scored ASC 14-9 in the third.
Leslie Wagoner led the Lady Hounds with a game-high 17 points.
