VIDALIA &8212; Rep. Rodney Alexander carefully evaded the most important political question he got Tuesday morning.

Can you make a law banning homework?

Alexander praised the fourth-grader who asked it for her law-making mind and repeated it for the crowd, but he made no promises.

Most of the other questions tossed at the U.S. congressman by his Vidalia Upper Elementary School audience were a little easier.

They talked about how much money he makes, how he got his start in politics, how government works and if he had another job.

Alexander was joined by local leaders Mayor Hyram Copeland and Concordia Parish Economic Director Teresa Dennis to give the fourth-graders a real-life look at social studies.

&8220;Someday you are going to have children here at school and you are going to care about them,&8221; Alexander said. &8220;You need to elect good people who are willing to serve.&8221;

Alexander told the children to rely on people like Copeland and Dennis for the immediate needs in their town. And Copeland said state and national leaders like Alexander make things like the riverfront, the community center, a recreation complex and new industry possible for Vidalia.

Alexander told the children it was important to be aware of politics even at their age, and to appreciate the things they have.

&8220;Tell your teachers how much you appreciate them. Thank them for the hard work they do. They are working to make things happen for you.&8221;
