Ferriday holding cleanup

FERRIDAY &8212; Those big, empty Dumpsters lying around town are a not-so-subtle hint from Mayor Gene Allen and the board of aldermen.
Let&8217;s clean up, Ferriday.
&8220;We&8217;re putting Dumpsters in all five of the town&8217;s districts and we hope people utilize them to the fullest,&8221; Allen said.
The Dumpsters will remain through the weekend.
Street supervisor Antone Duncan will be monitoring the Dumpsters daily and will have them emptied and replaced as necessary.
So don&8217;t be shy about filling them up.
&8220;We&8217;ll keep replacing them,&8221; Allen said.
The week-long cleanup is a follow-up to a cleaning day the town held in October 2004.
That cleanup involved Dumpsters and a dump truck moving through the town and taking unwanted items. This time, Allen said, the town was asking more of residents but giving them more time.
&8220;This time we&8217;re giving people the opportunity to clean up their own place,&8221; Allen said.
The Dumpsters will be provided by Preferred Transport, which has a contract with the town.
They will be located at Woodlawn Avenue and U.S. 84/65; Delaware Avenue and Louisiana 15; E.E. Wallace Boulevard and Maryland Avenue; Kentucky and Sixth street, and there will be two located on First Street at the city barn.
Alderman Johnnie Brown said the cleanup is about more than just taking out the trash.
&8220;We&8217;re looking at doing little things like making each occupant responsible for the cleanup of their property,&8221; he said. &8220;We want to encourage people clean up and bring back some pride.&8221;
Allen and Brown both said the cleanup will help clear debris that could otherwise clog up storm drains, and lead to potential flooding come the rainy season.
&8220;The state was in today opening up state drains and we&8217;ll be opening up the city drains this week,&8221; Allen said.
&8220;The rains are coming.&8221;
Elderly residents or anyone needing assistance moving large items is encouraged to call town hall to ask about getting a hand.
