Powell quiet, but Lady Braves get win

LORMAN &8212; You snap a four-game skid, win your first home game and pull out a win despite your leading scorer held well under her average, and somebody ought to take a picture.
So Rasaan Powell did.
To commemorate the win, the big post player for Alcorn State pulled out her camera despite being shoved around most of the night and having to work for her six points. But when the guards picked up their game and everyone else played together, the Lady Braves picked up a 56-49 win over Alabama State to snap a four-game losing streak.
Of course, this is going to really kill Powell&8217;s average of 21.2 points a game.
&8220;She&8217;s all right,&8221; said guard Tanika Nunez, who combined with guard Britany Myatt for 18 points and five assists while also grabbing five rebounds. &8220;She doesn&8217;t let it get to her. As long as we get the win and she did well on rebounding and assists, she&8217;s OK. It&8217;s just her presence on the court. It&8217;ll make teams key on her.&8221;
But getting points from someone not named Powell has been the mission for this team all season. The 6-2 junior has put the team on her back all season, and in the course of doing so she&8217;s leading the conference in scoring, rebounding and field-goal percentage.
It finally sank in Saturday. The Lady Braves (3-4, 5-10) canned six 3-pointers and had 38 points from their other four starters to take the pressure of Powell.
Precious Sheats hit a 3-pointer with 3:36 left to give the Lady Braves back the momentum after Bama State cut the Alcorn lead to 49-47.
&8220;I thought their guards really set the tempo,&8221; Bama State assistant coach James Oliver Jr. said. &8220;Our guards really didn&8217;t set the tempo. We did a pretty good job on (Powell) and set out to do a good job. It&8217;s a rule of thumb &8212; don&8217;t let their main gun beat you. We had a goal to not let anybody else get us, and they did that and won the game.&8221;
Sheats&8217; 3-pointer kept the tempo going late, and the Lady Braves did a number from there on out by allowing only two points in the final four minutes. Shantae Robinson had Bama State&8217;s only basket &8212; an uncontested layup off a turnover &8212; while others shots didn&8217;t fall and Robinson was called for traveling with 50 seconds left.
The Lady Braves got their points to pull away &8212; sure-shooting Natasha Dennis hit two free throws at the 2:24 mark before Nunez hit a jumper from the three-throw line for a 56-47 lead at the 1:43 mark.
&8220;I told them before the game since Nov. 21 we had to go with a new team,&8221; Alcorn head coach Shirley Walker said. &8220;They did well. The first half we did cut our turnovers down. I thought Precious, (Britany) Myatt, Nunez and Dennis had a real good game. I realize with inexperience they&8217;ve got to create their own class.
&8220;You&8217;ve got to play with the good and with the bad, and when the chips are down, hang in there and keep going. Things will work out for sure.&8221;
Bama State stayed in a 2-3 zone for nearly the entire second half in the hopes of shutting down Powell inside. The points she did get she earned, including a bucket underneath where she literally had to use her body to shove defenders aside.
That put the lead at 44-39 at the 8:37 mark, but Sheats drained a 3-pointer on the next possession for an eight-point lead. Then Sheats snagged a pass across the middle and hit a streaking Nunez down the floor for a bucket for a 49-39 lead with 7:34 left.
Bama State got hot with two 3-pointers from Frantina Coleman sandwiched around a bucket from Elma Stevenson to cut it to two points against Alcorn&8217;s 2-3 zone.
&8220; A couple of our post players were playing a little more than they had been and got fatigued,&8221; Oliver said. &8220;We made hustle mistakes, but mistakes nonetheless. We had a couple of turnovers in the second half.
&8220;We like to play inside-out. We had some 3s that didn&8217;t fall, but that&8217;s just the way the ball bounces sometimes. But that&8217;s the good thing about it &8212; they&8217;ve got to come to Montgomery.&8221;
The Lady Hornets were able to take Powell out of the game early in the game, and Alcorn&8217;s leading scorer didn&8217;t get a field goal until 4:31 left in the first half when she sank a turnaround jumper against a double-team for a 28-23 Alcorn lead.
Powell had only two free throws up until then &8212; she hit two of six &8212; while Alabama State played a good portion of the first half in a 2-3 zone. Alabama State cut the deficit to 25-23 on a 3-pointer form Rhonda Brown before Powell got that first bucket of the game.
Alcorn &8212; ranked as the worst at shooting 3-pointers in the SWAC &8212; hit three in the first five minutes of the game.
