NATCHEZ &8212; The case against a man suspected in the Jan. 4 shooting at a county grocery will go to the grand jury in the coming months.

Terry Woods, 30, appeared before Justice Court Judge Charlie Vess Tuesday morning for the next step in his case, a preliminary hearing.

Woods is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of shooting into a store building, one

count of possession of cocaine and one count of possession of prescription pills. He was arrested after a shooting at M&M Grocery and Deli on Martin Luther King Jr. Road that wounded one man.

Shooting victim Tremaine Proby testified at Tuesday&8217;s hearing, Vess said, along with arresting deputies from the Adams County Sheriff&8217;s Office.

&8220;I found sufficient evidence to bind it to the grand jury,&8221; Vess said after the hearing.

After the shooting, Woods allegedly left the scene, picked up a friend and led officers in a short chase once they traced his car. The drugs were found in the car.

At Tuesday&8217;s hearing, court-appointed attorney Tom Cotton withdrew from the case because Woods&8217; family had hired David Read and Patricia Dunmore.

The family will have to pay Cotton for the work he did on behalf of the state as an indigent defender.

Vess also denied the second request for bond reduction. The original property bond of $176,000 has already been reduced to $61,000 cash or bail. Vess said he was unwilling to go lower than that.

&8220;I felt like he might be a flight risk,&8221; Vess said afterwards. &8220;He has pending charges, 12 days before this he was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. He may be dangerous.&8221;

Vess also said he thought the bond was reasonable since Woods had the money to hire an attorney. Woods can file another request for bond reduction with a circuit court judge.

The case against Antonio Dawson, a passenger Woods picked up after the shooting, will not go further. Woods, 22, was charged with possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute.

&8220;I dismissed sending Dawson to the grand jury,&8221; Vess said. &8220;He was merely a passenger.&8221;
