Hounds drown Trojans

FERRIDAY &8212; Officials called timeout as water flowed onto the floor with 5:19 to play in the third quarter of Huntington&8217;s home finale on Thursday night.
After several minutes of school officials&8217; attempts to clean the ever-growing water problem &8212; and with the Hounds holding a 60-point lead &8212; the game was called, and Huntington earned a 74-14 victory over winless Tallulah Academy.
&8220;I don&8217;t know even know how it started,&8221; Huntington senior Ples Arthur said of the water.
Perhaps that&8217;s what Tallulah thought as the Hounds raced out to a 66-12 halftime lead.
Huntington&8217;s fullcourt press harassed the Trojans into 20 first-half turnovers, and the Hounds (25-1 overall, 10-0 in District 7-A) executed its transition offense with precision.
Thanks to runs of 22-0, 13-0 and 12-0 in the first half, Huntington put the game away early, which was expected after the Hounds defeated Tallulah 90-44 earlier in the season.
&8220;We just wanted to go out and get better and get a win,&8221; Arthur said.
Things didn&8217;t start out smoothly for the Hounds.
Coach David Boydstun allowed both of his seniors &8212; Arthur and Hunter Norwood &8212; to start the game.
After Tallulah&8217;s Jeremy Wilkin nailed a 3-pointer for a 3-2 lead in the game&8217;s opening two minutes, the Hounds were forced to call a quick timeout when they tried to inbound the ball.
While one player took the ball out of the net, his four teammates sprinted to the other end of
the court.
What did Boydstun tell his team in that early timeout?
&8220;We kind of laughed about it,&8221; he said, &8220;and then we went out and played. We&8217;ve been notoriously slow starters this year. They key is making a basket. Then, we can get into our press.&8221;
Arthur scored on a layup a minute later to ignite a 22-0 spurt that turned that early 3-2 deficit into a 24-3 advantage.
The lead swelled to 39-5 thanks to a 12-0 run by Huntington, and the Hounds led 66-12 at halftime.
Antonio Jordan provided the game&8217;s highlight with 5:03 to play when he took a bounced pass from Ricky Dunbar and flushed a two-handed dunk. Huntington students sitting then bowed to Jordan with &8220;we&8217;re not worthy&8221; cheer that was popularized by the 1990s movie &8220;Wayne&8217;s World.&8221;
The Hounds were in the midst of a 6-0 run when water flowed out of the girls&8217; visiting locker room and onto the floor.
School officials tried to stop the flooding &8212; using a shop-vac and several brooms &8212; before giving up. Boydstun said the locker room had flooded once earlier in the week.
With the game&8217;s outcome assured, game officials simply ended the game.
Three Huntington players scored in double figures, as Dunbar and Arthur scored 14 apiece and Zack Brown added 10.
Jordan contributed nine points, five rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots.
