NATCHEZ &8212; Sheriff&8217;s deputies have arrested an unregistered sex offender who has been living in a local hotel courtesy of FEMA.

After a 15-minute car chase Monday night, Kenneth Wayne Woods was charged with felony evasion, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of schedule II controlled substance (cocaine), driving under suspension and failure to register as a sex offender.

Woods has family in Natchez but says he is from the coast, Sheriff Ronny Brown said Tuesday. He&8217;s been living at the Terrace Motel and receiving a monthly check stating he is an evacuee from the coast. The Adams County Sheriff&8217;s Office is contacting the Federal Emergency Management Agency to determine if federal fraud charges apply.

ACSO Deputy Travis Patten attempted to stop Woods on a traffic violation late Monday night on U.S. 61 North near Atkins Lumber Company.

Woods didn&8217;t stop, leading to the chase that involved four ACSO vehicles, one Mississippi Department of Transportation vehicle, two Metro Narcotics cars and two Jefferson County Sheriff&8217;s vehicles.

Woods attempted to use his vehicle to hit the MDOT vehicle and others as the chase went from U.S. 61 to Mississippi 553, the Natchez Trace, Churchill Road and Artman Road. During the chase, a passenger threw beer bottles and other items from the car.

On Artman Road, Woods lost control of the vehicle and stopped. Both men ran from the car and were chased into the woods by officers and the K-9 unit. The dog apprehended Woods by taking him to the ground.

The ACSO will seek indictment for the sex offender charge during the next grand jury session.

Woods served time in Virginia for felony sexual assault in 1992 and failed to stay registered as a sex offender in Mississippi. Sex offenders must register with local authorities when they move to a new town.

Deputies are trying to identify the other man that ran from the vehicle and request assistance from the public. Anyone with any information can contact the ACSO at 601-442-2752.

Woods bond was set at $37,500.
