BROOKHAVEN &8212; Even though it had a 2-0 lead after three innings, the Cathedral Green Wave was not able to take advantage of one mistake after another by West Lincoln.
It took until the top of the seventh inning for Cathedral&8217;s bats to come alive as the Green Wave scored five runs on three hits and a couple of walks to defeat the Bears 7-0 in the Region 7-1A opener for both teams.
Cathedral (2-0, 1-0) scored one run each in the top of the second and third innings. And even though West Lincoln committed six errors, its pitching kept the Bears in the game.
The Green Wave was held scoreless over the next three innings by West Lincoln&8217;s pitchers, but starting and winning pitcher Patrick McDonough was up to the task as well. McDonough allowed just two hits and struck out 11 in six innings.
In the top of the seventh, Cole Junkin and David Osburn worked full-count walks and pinch-hitter Daniel Jenkins brought both runners in with a single. Jesse Morrison had a base hit to bring in Jenkins and Charlie Lane doubled in two runs.
Monterey 8, Block 7
JONESVILLE &8212; The Wolves jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two and a half innings, then had to hold off a furious rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Bears.
Monterey (3-1) looked like they were on their way to an easy win after scoring four runs in the top of the first inning and two each in the top of the second and third innings for an 8-0 lead.
&8220;We walked 17 (batters) tonight, 13 by the end of the third inning,&8221; Block head coach Scott Green said. &8220;We&8217;ve walked 41 in three games. It&8217;s kind of weird. We&8217;re striking out the side one inning and walking four the next. Monterey embarrassed us tonight. They stole home twice. We threw them out twice, but they stole home twice.&8221;
A.J. Sharp got the rally started for the Bears with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. While Monterey didn&8217;t score again the rest of the game, Block (0-3) chipped away at the lead by scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth. Despite trailing 8-3 at the time, the Bears were still in it.
&8220;Once we quit walking them, they didn&8217;t do anything else,&8221; Green said.
Evan White led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and Chase Sharp singled. A.J. Sharp, doubled to score White. Bryan Collins singled to bring in Chase and A.J. Sharp and just like that Monterey&8217;s lead was only 8-6.
Then Adam Coldiron singled to score Collins and the Bears were down by just one run. Jordan Wilson singled to put runners and first and third with just one out. However, a groundout and a strikeout ended the rally.

MCCOMB &8212; Things were looking so good heading into the bottom half of the seventh for the Rebels. Maybe too good.
An error, three walks and a key hit from Don Michael Lazarus capped the Pioneers&8217; five-run rally in their last at-bat off reliever Matt Barnes to take the win over the Rebels.
&8220;It was tough,&8221; Adams head coach Ron Rushing said. &8220;We actually played a great game. We swung the bats well, played good defense for six innings but just didn&8217;t close it out. Matt threw well. We just didn&8217;t make plays behind him.&8221;
Barnes came in of relief for Timmy Foster, who allowed only one unearned run and two hits while striking out nine. The Pioneers&8217; first two batters singled, and an error loaded the bases.
Kyle Adams drove in a run on a groundout, and the next batter walked to load the bases again. Barnes walked the next two batters to put the AC lead at 5-4 before Lazarus came up with the hit to score Warren Smith and Bubba Boggs.
The Rebels (1-2) led 5-0 thanks to two runs in the second and three in the fourth. In the second, Austin Weeks and Josh Calcote each laid down squeeze bunts to plate runners.
In the fourth, Eric Perry singled in Calcote and Clay Floyd before Dustin Carroll singled in Barnes for the 5-0 lead.
Both the Rebels&8217; games this week &8212; Friday against Franklin Academy and Saturday against Central Private &8212; have been cancelled, Rushing said.
WCCA 18, Lamar Christian 2
WOODVILLE &8212; The Rams picked it up at the plate in this District 6-A contest, and they took advantage of walks and errors to claim the five-inning win.
The Rams (1-0, 1-2) put up 11 runs in the first inning to take the quick lead. Three of them came when Cory Ellis tripled to score Joseph Landry, Blake Fontenot and Collin Dor/ for a 4-0 lead.
&8220;We made good contact,&8221; WCCA head coach Ray Olive said. &8220;We were aggressive, and we put a bunch of balls in play. We seemed to be able to find the gaps tonight, and we put a lot of pressure on their defense.&8221;
The Rams also got run-scoring doubles from Lane McCarty and Cory Havard. They struck out only twice after struggling in that department earlier.
Blake Fontenot went two innings and didn&8217;t allow a hit. Fontenot pitched the last three and allowed two hits, including a double that scored a run for Lamar.
Vidalia 12, Jena 7
JENA, La. &8212; The Vikings had to go to extra innings to finally put away the Class 3A Giants, and they did so by scoring five runs in the top of the 10th inning to pick up their first win of the year.
