PORT GIBSON &8212; One county employee is dead and another injured after the former road manager allegedly went on a shooting spree in Claiborne County Friday.
Carl Brandon, 52, turned himself in at the sheriff&8217;s department after he apparently fired shots in broad daylight in three county and city locations, Sheriff Frank Davis said.
All three shootings happened within a mile from each other between about 7:40 and 8:20 a.m.
Brandon was fired from his county road manager job eight years ago after sexual harassment allegations. All three shooting victims were involved in his case.
Attorney Allen Burrell, 54, was coming to work at his downtown law office when he was killed.
Sharon Mitchell, the manager at Natchez Steam Laundry across the street, said she arrived to work around 7:40 a.m. and saw Brandon parked in front of the laundry &8212; which is across the street from Burrell&8217;s office.
&8220;I thought maybe he was here for me, to pick up clothes,&8221; she said.
She saw Burrell pull in and soon heard the gunshots.
&8220;I don&8217;t know if he was out of the vehicle or maybe had one foot out,&8221; she said. &8220;It was louder than a car backfiring, and I looked to my right and saw Mr. Burrell laying on the ground. I called 911 and then went to him.&8221;
From there, Brandon went to Mansion Street where County Administrator James Miller lives, Sheriff Davis said.
&8220;I was getting ready to go to work,&8221; Miller said. &8220;I heard shots, but I thought it was a transformer. I heard it in rapid succession then jumped on the floor and crawled into the hallway.&8221;
Bullets broke the glass in several of Miller&8217;s front windows, went through his walls and through several rooms. Eleven bullet holes were left in one of the interior walls. Miller was not injured.
&8220;I think he was trying to kill me,&8221; Miller said Friday afternoon. &8220;I guess I&8217;m lucky. He could have knocked on the door, and I would have answered.&8221;
Miller&8217;s wife and children were out of town on a spring break trip.
Brandon&8217;s third victim, Loretha Porter was first transported to the Claiborne County Hospital and later airlifted to Jackson. Davis said she was conscious and talking on the scene.
&8220;I think she&8217;s going to be OK,&8221; he said.
Porter is the administrative assistant and secretary at the road department, which is located in the county barn on Mississippi 18.
She was the only employee in the front part of the building when Brandon came in, Road Manager Alonzo Jones said.
&8220;She knew him, so he just came in where she was,&8221; Jones said. &8220;He fired three shots.&8221;
Jones wasn&8217;t in the building at the time of the shooting, but arrived a few minutes later. He said he found Porter a few feet from her office door where she had crawled.
&8220;She had a big hole here and a big hole there,&8221; Jones said pointing to both his sides. &8220;I held on to her until the ambulance came.&8221;
Davis said Brandon used a 12-gauge shotgun in the first two incidents and switched to a pistol for the last.
Davis said Brandon was &8220;calm&8221; when he turned himself in at the sheriff&8217;s department.
Brandon faces charges of murder and aggravated assault. He was being held at the Claiborne County Correctional Facility and won&8217;t be arraigned until Monday, Davis said.
