NATCHEZ &8212; A wireless networking company will soon take up residence in a hangar at the Natchez-Adams County Airport.
Space Data Corp., based in Chandler, Ariz., will use a small amount of space and employ one or two locals for a few hours each day during certain seasons.
Space Data provides wireless communication through radios for companies and emergency services, including oil field workers.
In Natchez, the company wants to launch balloons that transmit radio waves used to provide communication between radios up to 300 miles away, Airport Manager Clint Pomeroy said.
The company came to Natchez after Katrina in hopes of selling their services to the government or disaster agencies, Pomeroy said.
Once launched, the balloons travel 50,000 feet up and float for about six or seven hours.
A Natchez resident will be responsible for launching the six- to eight-foot balloons &8212; similar to weather balloons. Pomeroy said the job will take about 45 minutes several times a day. The Natchez site will only be used when winds here are right during the summer months.
But space at the airport will be rented year round to store a small amount of equipment.
&8220;We&8217;ll get a little bit of revenue from leasing the space,&8221; Pomeroy said. &8220;And a few folks in town will make some money.&8221;
The airport will get about $2,000 a year from the company.
Space Data has similar mobile stations set up in other states.
The company could not be reached for comment.
