FERRIDAY &8212; A late-morning fire damaged but didn&8217;t destroy the home of Rep. Bryant Hammett Wednesday.
The cause of the blaze could have been sparks from a grinder sheet metal workers were using to work around the house&8217;s chimney.
Concordia Parish Fire District No. 2 Chief Nolen Cothren, who was in Alexandria but familiar with the details through his team, said sparks likely flew into the space between the chimney and the roof and caught the attic on fire.
A quick response to the fire by firefighters &8212; and some other volunteers &8212; enabled them to control and extinguish the fire before it took the entire house.
&8220;The cleaning lady called the office,&8221; Susan Hammett said. &8220;If she hadn&8217;t been here, I&8217;d have been another 45 minutes and it would have been gone.&8221;
The Hammett&8217;s housekeeper was in the house and called the offices of Hammett and Associates engineering firm. The office called the fire department and then made the short trip to the house.
&8220;They were here on ladders before the fire department got here,&8221; Hammett said.
With the Legislature in session, Hammett said he got the call and made the trip &8220;very quickly.&8221;
&8220;I&8217;m just so glad nobody got hurt,&8221; he said.
