Test results mean summer school enrollment will be high

VIDALIA &8212; Early results on some state tests aren&8217;t anything to jump up and down about, Superintendent Kerry Laster said Thursday.
LEAP and GEE &8212; the tests fourth-, eighth- and high school students take &8212; results came in last week. Administrators spent the weekend reviewing them to make summer school plans.
&8220;We are going to have a lot of children that are going to have to go to summer school,&8221; Laster said. &8220;At least as many, if not more than last year.&8221;
Fourth- and eighth-graders have to pass the test before moving on to the next grade. Those who attend summer school will receive remediation for about a month, then retake the test mid-summer.
Parents have already received notification if their child failed the test.
The district doesn&8217;t yet have results on the iLEAP &8212; the test all other grades took &8212; and Laster said it was too early to make predictions about overall school rankings.
&8220;All we got back was pass or fail on the LEAP and GEE,&8221; she said. &8220;I want to be optimistic.&8221;
High school scores looked good, she said, with only two or three graduating seniors failing to pass the test.
Administrators will finalize plans for summer school in the next few days, determining how many teachers and classes they&8217;ll need. Though summer school will be large, Laster said she expects good results from those enrolled. Many of those who failed the LEAP only did so by a few points.
&8220;Those kids we can get over the hump,&8221; she said. &8220;It&8217;s the big spread that&8217;s harder to get to passing.&8221;
Summer school teachers will focus on specific areas students struggled in, instead of trying to remediate a year&8217;s worth of lessons, Laster said.
She said she also saw some improvement in eighth-grade scores, and an increased number that scored &8220;mastery,&8221; a higher ranking than &8220;basic&8221; passing.
Scores for the iLEAP won&8217;t be released until the fall. School Performance Scores &8212; the rankings that determine school improvement levels and academic rankings &8212; will come after that.
