LORMAN &8212; Alcorn State Men&8217;s Basketball coach Sam West will have a busy week at the end of this month.
Starting July 23, West will spend four days with his basketball camp on the campus of Alcorn State University, and will then zip down to his hometown of Natchez for his golf tournament that Friday.
West said things like this were all part of being a coach at the collegiate level.
&8220;It&8217;s going to be a week unlike any other,&8221; West said. &8220;We&8217;ve got the basketball camp, the golf tournament, and then recruiting. We&8217;re also in the process of recruiting. I&8217;m heading to Memphis this weekend, plus that trip to Dallas after the golf tournament. It&8217;s a busy time.&8221;
West&8217;s Fourth Annual Basketball Camp was originally scheduled to begin on July 16, but forces beyond his control forced a one-week postponement.
&8220;We had a conflict with the recruiting schedule, so we pushed it back,&8221; he said. &8220;We couldn&8217;t have it that week. That&8217;s just NCAA policy, and we&8217;re going to comply with it.&8221;
He said he had plenty of excitement in store for those who attend the four-day camp.
&8220;We&8217;ll have a week of fun and fundamentals and competitive games for grades 7-12 boys,&8221; West said. &8220;It&8217;s really like a basketball boot camp from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. We&8217;ll give them three square meals, a hot shower and a place to lay their head; but the rest will be basketball. We&8217;re going to have great speakers and motivational speakers.&8221;
The cost to attend the camp is $160 for all-nighters and $120 for commuters.
Once basketball camp wraps up on July 26, West will head to Natchez to prepare for the Third Annual Sam West Golf Tournament.
The tournament will benefit the Special Olympics of the Natchez area, several regional Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapters, the American Cancer Society, and Alcorn State Men&8217;s Basketball.
&8220;The first two years (the tournament) was in Jackson,&8221; West said. &8220;This year we wanted to bring it to Natchez. We had at least 60 golfers the first two years, and we think we can do that again. We want to really try to get the community involved in what we&8217;re doing. We want to show what it&8217;s about and the fun we have.&8221;
West also wished to note that the Coca-Cola team was the defending champions, but had one thing he wished to remind them of.
&8220;The Coca-Cola team, minus Tron &8220;The Hulk&8221; McCoy, is the defending champion,&8221; he said.
