NATCHEZ &8212; Controversy and missed opportunities were the name of the game Wednesday night at Duncan Park, as the Natchez 10-year-old Dixie Youth All-Stars were eliminated from the subdistrict tournament by Brookhaven American by a score of 6-2.

The squad from Brookhaven also beat Natchez 14-13 Friday night to send them to the loser&8217;s bracket.

While the last out was recorded at approximately 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Brookhaven&8217;s win was not official until about 45 minutes later after a protest by the Natchez coaching staff over the final out.

Natchez had runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the sixth when Thomas Carey took off on and was called out for interference after hurdling either the baseball or the runner, depending upon your perspective.

The players and coaches cleared the field, but a protest was eventually lodged by the Natchez coaches, leading to a protest committee session in the press box.

Heated words were exchanged between all three sides, with the umpire repeatedly stating his position that &8220;it was a judgment call. You can&8217;t protest that.&8221;

The protest committee finally ruled in favor of Brookhaven American, officially giving them the 6-2 win.

Things looked good for Natchez early, as they took a 1-0 lead after Tyler Buckles led off the game with a single and scored a few batters later.

Brookhaven tied the game up in the bottom of the second, but Natchez struck again in the top of the third when Turner Janette singled, advanced on two walks, and then scored on an error to give Natchez a 2-1 lead.

The Natchez All-Stars had the opportunity to get out of several jams, but were unable to make the big play. After Brookhaven tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, a potential third out was booted, allowing Brookhaven to score two more runs.

The top of the fifth saw Natchez fail to score with runners on second and third and no one out.

A two-run double by Andrew Culver of Brookhaven in the bottom of the fifth sealed the win.

Landon Nettles took the win on the mound for Brookhaven, while Janette took the loss for Natchez.
