FERRIDAY &8212; Talks of a carousel for downtown Ferriday highlighted town improvement discussions at Wednesday&8217;s Revitalization Committee meeting.
Committee member Carol Tomko brought the idea for purchasing a carousel to the board in last month&8217;s committee meeting and Wednesday further explained the possibility.
&8220;It&8217;s easy to get a carousel, and am I worried about the money &8212; no,&8221; Tomko said. &8220;My concern is whether or not it will stay in the same shape as we purchased it in.&8221;
Vandalism would not be a problem Anna Ferguson said and offered, &8220;don&8217;t be concerned about that&8221; to the possibility.
Carousel estimates and pictures brought to last month&8217;s meeting were antiques and offered wooden horses. Replicas, offering a cheaper price tag than the roughly $1 million antique, were also discussed.
Tomko revealed Wednesday that an aluminum carousel could be purchased, allowing color choice and design of the buyer, for closer to $60,000. With expected maintenance and insurance the cost would be approximately $100,000.
Maintenance of the carousel that would be placed at the end of Louisiana Avenue would cost approximately 10 percent of the purchase price a year. A cost of $2 for riding the carousel was also mentioned.
In other business, billboards displaying the plans for town improvement are finished, committee member Teresa Dennis said. The signs will be placed in planters currently alongside Louisiana Avenue in celebration of the upcoming 100th anniversary of the town of Ferriday.
