NATCHEZ &8212; Some Adams County homes were without power Wednesday night following an afternoon thunderstorm that downed at least nine trees and countless limbs in the area.
Entergy spokesman Checky Herrington said Natchez was among several areas in the state experiencing the worst power outages. No time estimate for when power would be fully restored was available.
The Natchez Fire Department reported to downed trees or hanging limbs on Woodville Drive, Carmel Church Road in Kingston and the area directly behind Natchez Ford off U.S. 61 South.
Emergency Management Director George Souderes said his office also received calls of limbs on power lines in the Duncan Park area.
The worst of the storm hit between 4 and 4:30 p.m. A severe thunderstorm warning expired at 4:45, Souderes said.
The highest recorded wind gust was 47 mph and sixth-tenths of an inch of rain fell, he said.
Much of Mississippi and Louisiana saw similar conditions. Entergy reported 130,000 customers statewide were without power Wednesday afternoon. Parts of Jackson were hit with small hail, and wind gusts up to 60 mph.
While the storm was hitting the Emergency Management office also responded to reports of a metal box marked &8220;biohazard&8221; in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot on U.S. 61 South. Souderes said the box was empty and no danger to anyone, but standard procedures were followed.
No storm-related injuries were reported in the area.
