Ferriday &8212; The Concordia Animal Welfare Shelter and Rescue will have a poker run on Lake Saint John, Saturday at 2 p.m.

Proceeds from the contest will benefit the shelter and help with the costs of feeding and veterinary care of the animals, director of CAWS Lisa Smith said.

&8220;This is a great way for people and their pets to have lots of fun, win some money and win prizes, and the money is for a good cause,&8221; Smith said.

Participants can purchase their packets, containing a map of the lake with pier stops and official rules, at The Dock between 6 and 10 p.m. on Friday and between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

At the start of the contest, contestants will have 45 minutes to get to each pier and pick up a card.

At the end of the contest, participants will give six cards to the judges to make the best possible hand from five cards.

The first-place winner receives 15 percent of the purse, second place receives 10 percent, third place receives 5 percent and fourth place is reimbursed their entry fee.

The cost of the contest is $25 per watercraft and pets play for free for a chance to win prizes.

There is also a $25 cost for any extra hands purchased.

Pets must be present on watercraft at the first stop at the Watertower Caf/, which along with Kirk Montgomery and the Dock, have been wonderful sponsors, Smith said.

All hands must be posted at The Dock between 6:30 and 7:15 p.m.

President of the Miss-Lou Humane Society Donna Maroon said the shelter raised $2,000 at the last poker run in May.
