NATCHEZ &8212; An elderly woman was the victim of a scam Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The woman was approached by another woman at a business on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive, Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said.
The woman said she had found some money and would share it with the elderly woman if she would give her money now.
The two went to a bank. The woman asking for money waited outside while the elderly woman tried to withdraw cash from her account. The bank would not give her the amount she wanted, but they did give her a cashier&8217;s check.
The woman asking for money told her to go to another bank to cash it. The victim said she did not remember how the other woman got into her vehicle. They ended up on Linden Lane, where the younger woman took the elderly woman&8217;s purse and ran.
A witness saw what happened and called the police, Mullins said.
The purse was found between Homochitto Street and Duncan Avenue. The cashier&8217;s check was the only item from the purse not recovered, he said.
The police are still looking for the suspect, and a reward for information is available at Crime Stoppers 601-442-5000.
&8220;We have something happen similar to this about once a year,&8221; Mullins said. &8220;The charge is theft by deception. The target is always elderly people, usually elderly females.&8221;
Mullins said any stranger who approaches someone saying they found money is suspect.
&8220;No stranger is ever going to actually find money and approach you at a business,&8221; Mullins said.
Anyone who experiences this should refuse to cooperate with the person, make a note of their description, try to get license plate numbers and a description of the vehicle and call the police.
