NATCHEZ &8212; A vision and a dream are unfolding in rural Adams County, where Gary and Paula Stiles are creating a Christian retreat center.
Inspired to buy the property at 11 Round Hill Road a couple of years ago, the couple, both evangelists, have restored and converted an old house to become the retreat center, complete with a sanctuary outfitted with electronic equipment, a kitchen and a bedroom with full bath.
The retreat continues to grow, as the couple works on renovations to another 600-square-foot building that will provide overnight accommodations for up to 25. A third phase of the renovation will add another 10 to 12 places for overnight guests.
&8220;Gary has had some awesome ideas for the renovations,&8221; Paula said, describing the work going on at the property in the Sibley area off Lower Woodville Road.
Gary said he had never done carpentry work before but that he has learned to do it and has had help from a young man to whom he ministered about 15 years ago when the young man was a troubled youth.
&8220;For two guys who couldn&8217;t build a rabbit cage, we&8217;ve done really well,&8221; he said.
Gary and Paula hold services at the retreat two times a week as part of their ministry, House of the Lord Ministry. However, they do not become involved with groups who use the retreat unless they are invited to do so.
Furthermore, the retreat is open not only to church groups but also to businesses and schools, for example. &8220;The retreat is open to anyone. It&8217;s a place where people can come to change their surroundings, to rest, and to develop relationships,&8221; Paula said.
The retreat takes its name from the Stiles&8217; ministry &8212; House of the Lord Ministry Christian Retreat Center.
There is no charge for use of the center, Gary said. They accept donations that go toward the preservation and upkeep of the buildings and grounds.
Paula said the couple&8217;s beginning in Christian ministry began more than 20 years ago when they were living in South Louisiana.
&8220;We had a successful business, but one day I realized I had an empty feeling,&8221; she said.
&8220;I knew of God but I didn&8217;t have a relationship with him. I started seeking God, and God brought us to him,&8221; she said.
Gary and Paula said they believe God directed them to the place where they are creating the retreat. &8220;Every step it has been, &8216;OK, God, what&8217;s next,&8217;&8221; she said.
Paula said they hope to see the center used for youth camp meetings, women retreats, men retreats, marriage retreats and simply time away for individuals.
The future plans also include an RV park with all the amenities RV owners require.
Most important, the couple wants the retreat to &8220;provide a place for God&8217;s people where there are no distractions while seeking God.&8221;
