Hospital makes tough decisions

Any businessperson will tell you tough decisions, no matter how seemingly unpleasant, must be made from time to time.

Those decisions are especially important when a business is trying to &8220;right itself&8221; after listing in the water. Staying afloat requires constant adjustment.

Natchez Regional Medical Center, the Adams County-owned hospital, announced one of those course corrections this week.

The hospital&8217;s day care, NRMC CEO Jeff Wesselman said Monday, would close at the beginning of December.

The reason is simple economics. The day care, hospital administrators say, drains cash from the facility and doesn&8217;t serve a high number of employees as it was first envisioned. Although administrators didn&8217;t say so outright, running a day care is just not the hospital&8217;s main focus. Leadership and efficiency experts will tell you that if something isn&8217;t core to the mission, move it elsewhere or get rid of it.

We, like some of the employees and clients of the facility, are not thrilled that the day care center must close, but we fully understand the decision.

The hospital is working to get itself out of debt after a brief period of mismanagement. To that end, tough decisions need to be made and from where we stand it appears those business decisions are being made. And we applaud that.
