NATCHEZ &8212; Last year, Larry Havard teamed up with Richard Hess, Chi Chi Barnes and Stanley Oberlin to win the Krewe of Alpheus Four-Person Scramble.

Now, Havard is a two-time champion in this tournament, as this year he teamed up with Duncan Park tennis pro Frankie Spence, Dr. Jeff Anderson and Howard Jones to shoot an 18-under-par 53 to win the championship flight Saturday afternoon at Duncan Park&8217;s golf course.

&8220;Them guys there, they did it,&8221; Spence said of his teammates. &8220;I hit it down the middle and they hit it on the green. Howard and Doc hit the drives. I thought we were capable of (shooting a 53). We made a few putts that we shouldn&8217;t have made and a bunch that we should&8217;ve made.&8221;

&8216;They carried me today,&8221; Havard said. &8220;I was playing on one leg.&8221;

The Spence team, which started on No. 13, had birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 to go with eagles on Nos. 5 and 7 and a par on No. 9 for a front-nine score of 10-under 25 and eight birdies on the back nine for a score of 8-under 28.

&8220;We made a few long putts,&8221; Spence said. &8220;Larry putted it in for eagle on No. 5 and Dr. Anderson putted it in for eagle on 7.&8221;

&8220;We all played good,&8221; Jones said.

As for Barnes, Hess and Oberlin, they teamed up with Adolf Jonaitis. They struggled early in the round and wound up with a 5-under-par 66, but lost a chance to finish third in the first flight in a scorecard playoff to the Jason P. Dupr/ Memorial Foundation team of Diana Glaze, Charlie Ratliff, Ed Leigh and Tom Schwager.

&8220;We couldn&8217;t make putts,&8221; Hess said. &8220;We had some lip out. We had some were we needed one more turn and the ball just stopped. The greens rolled slow real early. But it was fun, that&8217;s for sure.&8221;

In this the 16th year of this golf tournament, 56 players comprised of the 14 teams that played in the event. Cash prizes of $250, $150 and $100 were on the line for first, second and third places, respectively, in both the championship and first flights.

Some of the proceeds go to Pleasant Acre Day School.

&8220;There were 32 sponsors in this year&8217;s tournament, which is a credit to the dedication to the Krewe members to help this worthy cause,&8221; Duncan Park PGA Master Pro Marvin Gray said. &8220;Last year they had just 23 players. They did great having a large turnout.&8221;

Finishing one shot back of the Spence-Anderson-Havard-Jones team were Joe Brumfield, Charles Mardis, Bubba Bruce and K.G. Watkins, representing Miss-Lou Body Shop, who had a round of 17-under-par 54.

&8220;We had a pretty good round,&8221; Bruce said. &8220;K.G. missed two eagle chips by a foot on 10 and 11. As a team, we played great. On the front, we were 10-under. We birdied all the holes and eagled No. 7. K.G. drove the green and we had a eagle putt from three feet (on No. 7). And on the back nine the only holes we didn&8217;t birdie were the par-3s.&8221;
