Vikings fighting for playoff spot

Vidalia &8212; With four weeks remaining in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association&8217;s regular season, it&8217;s do-or-die time in Vidalia, where the Vikings must win out or risk elimination from the state playoffs.

&8220;We&8217;re going to have to win out to get in,&8221; said Viking head coach Dee Faircloth. &8220;Then we&8217;ll get to travel to play John Curtis (the No. 1-ranked team in Class AA). Even if we win the district, all that guarantees us is a spot.&8221;

The Vikings traveled to Farmerville last week and suffered a big setback with a 35-28 loss.

&8220;Everything that could go wrong went wrong,&8221; Faircloth said. &8220;We had two snaps go over the punter&8217;s head. We had them third and 12, and stopped them on the one-inch-line, and we had a facemask penalty that gave them a first down. We should&8217;ve won that game. We should be 4-2.&8221;

The Vikings (2-4), will host Ouachita Christian (4-2) this week at Dee Faircloth Stadium.

&8220;They like to run the ball right up your kazoo,&8221; Faircloth said. &8220;Last year they had a really good quarterback. They made it all the way to the semi-finals. They lost 23 seniors. This year they&8217;re more of a running team, although when they see our pass defense they might throw the ball every down.&8221;

Defensively, Faircloth is expecting to face a stingy bunch.

&8220;They run a 4-4 and a 5-2 defense,&8221; he said. &8220;They get around to the ball. They&8217;re tough.&8221;

After a frustrating first six weeks of the season, Faircloth said he is still trying to find the best combination of players to start.

&8220;We&8217;re constantly moving people around trying to find the best combination,&8221; he said. &8220;We haven&8217;t found it yet. Usually, by the second or third week of the season we&8217;ve found what we need, but we haven&8217;t this year. That&8217;s a problem.&8221;

The Vikings will host Ouachita Christian at 7 p.m. Friday.

Sterlington at Ferriday

The seventh-ranked Ferriday Trojans came out of their two game road trip unscathed, and now prepare for a home match-up with Sterlington Friday at 7 p.m.

Sterlington has won four straight after season-opening losses to Ouachita and Rayville.

Block at St. Mary&8217;s

The Block Bears (0-6, 0-1 in district play) will hit the road for Natchitoches, La. Friday night when they take on district foe St. Mary&8217;s (0-6).

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
