Led by Ashley Green and Shateca Collins, the Block Lady Bears pulled off a huge upset with a 53-35 win over the Harrisonburg Lady Bulldogs at the Block Tournament Monday night.

It was anyone’s game as the score was tied at 29-29 at the end of the third quarter. But midway through the fourth quarter of what was still a close game, Block (7-4) went back to the 1-2-1-1 press it used earlier in the game.

“We forced some turnovers and got some lay-ups,” Lady Bears head coach Carl Gilmore said. “They started fouling us. We shot free throws pretty good.”

Block ended up outscoring Harrisonburg 24-6 in the fourth quarter for the 18-point win.

“The fourth quarter was our quarter,” Gilmore said. “We got the shots we wanted and we put the pressure on them.”

Green finished with a game-high 18 points and Collins scored 13 points for the Lady Bears. Jefferson Sloan led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points.

Gilmore credits his defense for forcing Harrisonburg (20-5) out of its offensive rhythm for most of the game.

The Lady Bears held the Lady Bulldogs to just four points in the first quarter and then took a 17-14 halftime lead. Harrisonburg outscored Block 15-12 in the third quarter to tie the game after three quarters of play.
