JONESVILLE &8212; Sarah Cole is giving men and women a reason to look in the mirror each day.

Monday Cole, 34, a licensed cosmetologist, opened The Hair Clinic, a new full-service salon in Jonesville that also specializes in a hair replacement procedure for cancer, chemotherapy and others who have lost their hair.

&8220;A woman&8217;s hair is her glory,&8221; Cole said. &8220;That&8217;s what makes her feel beautiful.&8221;

The procedure is called cranial prosthetics.

Cole said she first shaves the patient&8217;s head, if it is required.

Next she tests the scalp to see if the patient is allergic to the bonding agent (a glue-like substance), then applies the agent and prosthetic hair on her head.

Her first recipient of the treatment was her husband Jimmy, who Cole said was healthy, but is going bald.

In May, Cole and Jimmy went to the New Image University in Florida, where Cole received her hair replacement training.

&8220;He was one of my volunteer models that I volunteered,&8221; Cole said laughing.

Cole said shortly after the procedure, she would catch Jimmy glancing in the mirror a lot and spending lots of time combing his hair.

Jimmy will be receiving another hair replacement procedure Friday or Saturday, Cole said.

The hair can be cut, colored and styled to the patient&8217;s liking, Cole said.

Cole said patients could choose actual human hair to fit their lifestyle.

&8220;If a person works outdoors, I can choose hair that is more durable,&8221; Cole said.

Cole said she was inspired to learn about cranial prosthetics after a cousin received the treatment eight months ago in Jackson.

She said her cousin was losing her hair because of medication she was taking for an illness.

&8220;When she got the treatment, I couldn&8217;t tell that it wasn&8217;t her real hair, and I&8217;m a beautician,&8221; Cole said.

&8220;She had it colored the same, cut the same, and fixed the same, and it really looked natural.&8221;

Cole said it was important to her to keep the procedure confidential, so she does all of her work in a separate room in the salon.

&8220;I think this is really important because a lot of women don&8217;t want people to know they&8217;re losing their hair,&8221; Cole said.

Cole said she is being extra care in choosing who she hires to staff the salon because she wants to keep her hair treatment patients&8217; identities confidential and she knows how a salon is often a place for gossip.

For cancer and chemo patients, Cole said the prosthetic hair could also be removed as the patient&8217;s real hair grows back.

But the best part, Cole said, is that cancer patients can have their insurance provider pay for the procedure if their doctor prescribes it.

Cole said she will also apply the procedure to men and children and will make house calls if the patient cannot come to her.

&8220;I&8217;m not here just to cut hair,&8221; Cole said. &8220;Anytime, day or night, I&8217;ll come to them (patients) and talk, laugh or cry if they need me.&8221;
