HARRISONBURG, La. &8212; The Cathedral Green Wave were supposed to take on Grace Christian in the first day of the Harrisonburg Tournament at 5:45 p.m. Instead, they wound up playing the host Bulldogs at 8:15 p.m. Thursday.
&8220;They (Harrisonburg) changed the bracket on Monday. They said they faxed us the bracket,&8221; Green Wave head coach Peter Arnold said. &8220;I talked with coach (Roy) Garcia and he said we never got one. They had changed (the bracket) to where we took on Harrisonburg. We sat there for two and a half hours. We got there at 4:45 getting ready to play at 5:45, and we were told we were playing at 8:15. So we decided to stay there and we knocked them out of the tournament.&8221;
It really didn&8217;t matter, though, as Juan Gray scored a game-high 20 points and Andy Lucas had 14 points as Cathedral jumped out to a 16-3 lead over Harrisonburg at the end of the first quarter and rolled to a 49-30 win over the Bulldogs.
&8220;Our defense smothered them. That was our most complete game we played all season,&8221; Arnold said. &8220;We rebounded the ball. We got all the loose balls. And we were patient on offense.&8221;
Cathedral will take on Central of Jonesville in a quarterfinal game today at 8:15 p.m. A win by the Green Wave will put them in the semifinals against Grace Christian Saturday at 11:15 a.m.
In other tournament action, the Cathedral Lady Green Wave lost to the Harrisonburg Lady Bulldogs, the Sicily Island Lady Tigers defeated the Grace Christian Lady Warriors, the Sicily Island Tigers defeated the Caldwell Parish Spartans, and the Grace Christian Warriors defeated the Monterey Wolves.
Vidalia boys 54, Block 41
JONESVILLE &8212; Thanks to a 23-point effort from Gary Stewart, the Vidalia Vikings won for the first time in three games and improved to 6-2 on the season with 13-point win over the Bears Thursday night.
Stewart was the only Vidalia player to score in double figures. Brandon Hawkins and Quartrell Thomas scored eight points each as the Vikings sealed the win with a 17-10 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Ladarius Collins finished with 11 points and Ray Curry had 10 points to lead the Bears.
Block girls 46, Vidalia 13
JONESVILLE &8212; The Lady Bears led by only three points after one quarter of play only to put the game out of reach by outscoring the Lady Vikings 16-1 in the second quarter.
If that wasn&8217;t bad enough, Vidalia (1-7) didn&8217;t score a point in the fourth quarter.
Ashley Green led Block with 12 points. Tysheka Rodgers led Vidalia with six points.
The games between Vidalia and Block were originally scheduled for tonight, but were rescheduled to Thursday night because of the Jonesville Christmas Parade.
