After limiting Trinity Episcopal to just nine first half points, the Huntington Hounds cruised in the second half to a 68-48 victory at home Friday night.
After a scoreless first two minutes of play, the Hounds jumped ahead early by going on a 7-0 run. Trinity scored three points in the first quarter, but ended the first period trailing 20-3.
The Hounds opened the game with a half court zone defense, and two early blocks by Antonio Jordan set the pace for the Huntington defense in the first half. Cold shooting from the field and limited shot opportunities kept the Saints off the scoreboard.
The Hounds continued to build on their lead in the second quarter as Huntington outscored the Saints 12-6 in the second quarter to take a 32-9 lead at the half.
Trinity tried to get their offense going in the third quarter, and was led by Jon Davis King who returned to the game after receiving a cut above his left eye in the first half. King scored eight of the Saints 17 third quarter points, but he and the Saints’ defense could not hold back the Hounds’ driving offense and ended the third quarter trailing 50-26.
King and Steven Ridley each scored 10 points in the fourth quarter for the Saints, but Ricky Dunbar dropped in 10 points of his own for the Hounds to close out the 68-48 victory over the Saints at home.
“Our kids worked very hard over the past two days and were ready to play tonight,” Huntington head coach David Boydstun said after the game.
He said he was pleased with the way his team bounced back after loosing to Brookhaven a week ago. Boydstun said his team found the intensity that it was missing against Brookhaven and applied it on defense.
“Our defense stepped it up,” Boydstun said. “Our defense can be really good when we get after it.”
Trinity head coach David King said he did not think the Saints were ready for Huntington.
“We weren’t ready to play. The game plan was to hold the ball, but we got into a running match with those guys and lost,” King said.
He said despite the big loss, his team has a lot of character, and added they will bounce back.
