A 23-year-old woman was shot accidentally Friday night, law officials said.
At 12:15 a.m., Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said, two police officers working at a rap concert at the convention center heard shots fired on Franklin Street.
The two responded and arrested George D. Smith, 12 Terry Road, on charges of aggravated assault, and his brother Carlos Antoine Smith, 18, on charges of possession of marijuana.
“There was an altercation with (George Smith) and some other people,” Mullins said. “Shots were fired, and a 23-year-old female was struck once in the back.”
Police found a .22 caliber revolver under a car’s seat at the time, he said.
“(Smith) fired the shots outside the car and then got in the car,” Mullins said.
The victim, Natasha Letcher, 201 Lumber St., was taken to Natchez Regional Medical Center. She was treated and released from the hospital at 3:05 a.m.
“She is alleged to have been hit accidentally,” Mullins said. “She was a bystander. From our investigation so far, that’s how it appears.”
Police are still investigating the situation, and more arrests may be made later, he said.
