Lady Trojans fall

Over the years, the Ferriday Lady Trojans have had a hard time winning district games in Madison Parish, whether it be against McCall in the past or, more recently, Madison High.
Such was the case Friday night as Ferriday’s offense couldn’t figure out Madison’s man-to-man defense in the second quarter and eventually lost to the Lady Jaguars 60-56 in a District 4-2A game.
“We played with a lot of intensity. It’s very tough to play them at home,” Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron said. “The atmosphere is very loud. Even though we lost, I’m pleased with the way we played.”
One thing Abron was not happy about was how her team’s offense went flat in the second quarter against Madison’s man defense. She probably also wasn’t happy that Ferriday (8-15, 1-2) had no answer for Edeena Cooper and Jashula Cole, who combined to score 40 points — two-thirds of the Lady Jaguars’ offense. Cooper and Cole finished with 20 points each.
Briana Foster led Ferriday with 17 points. Jasmine Butler had 15 points and Jasmine Upchurch had 14 points.
The second quarter turned out to be the difference in the game as Madison (15-9, 3-0) outscored Ferriday 19-11 to take a 28-19 lead at halftime.
“The second quarter, we kind of went flat on offense,” Abron said. “They played us man-to-man and our offense wasn’t clicking. We were scrambling trying to figure out where we were going.”
The Lady Trojans’ offense got on track in the second half as they scored 19 points in the third quarter and 18 in the fourth quarter. However, the Lady Jaguars also scored 19 points in the third quarter, making any thought of a come-from-behind win even tougher.
Ferriday did manage to hold Madison to 13 points in the fourth quarter, but the rally fell a little bit short.
“Jasmine (Upchurch) fouled out with three minutes left in the fourth quarter. We had to go to our bench. I didn’t want to do that,” Abron said. “Jasmine scored only two points in the fourth quarter. Other people needed to step up offensively.”

PORT GIBSON — The Wildcats’ defense held Stevan Ridley to just eight points, but Parker Brumfield stepped up and had his best game of the season as he scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Saints to a 10-point win in MPSA District 7-A action.
Jon Davis King had 15 points for fifth-ranked Trinity (9-7, 6-1), winners of three straight games since losing at home to Class AA Bowling Green last Saturday. But it wasn’t easy.
Chamberlain-Hunt trailed by six points at the end of the first quarter, but the Wildcats got as close as one point in the third quarter before the Saints eventually pulled away.
Steven Hacker and Grand Godley scored 15 points each and Chris Callahan had 12 points for the Wildcats.

NATCHEZ — For the most part, the Lady Green Wave played a very competitive game against the Lady Bears and head coach Kathy Graning was proud of the team’s effort.
However, one quarter perhaps kept Cathedral from picking up its third win of the season and its first in Region 7-1A — the third quarter, when West Lincoln outscored Cathedral 19-4 after leading by just three points at halftime.
Kari Easley and Kacey Smith helped make sure that the Lady Bears would keep the Lady Green Wave winless in 7-1A as they scored 15 and 14 points, respectively. Kristian Dobard led Cathedral (2-19, 0-7) with 11 points.

TALLULAH, La. — Keith Williams scored a game-high 31 points and the Jaguars, ranked No. 5 in the Overall Top 15 poll and No. 1 in all of Class 2A, needed every bit of them to hold off the Trojans in a District 4-2A game.
Madison (25-4, 3-0) also needed a 27-point fourth quarter to put away Ferriday, which cut a 14-point halftime deficit to just six points at the end of the third quarter. The Jaguars appeared on their way to another lopsided district win after outscoring the Trojans 26-10 in the second quarter to take a 36-22 lead at the break.
Matthew Smith led Ferriday (12-11, 1-2) with 25 points, but Montrell Tennessee was held to nine points. Darren Cooper had 14 points and De’Andra Allen chipped in with 13 points for the Jaguars.

NATCHEZ — Jeremy Byrd scored a game-high 20 points and Aaron Shaw chipped in with 19 points as the Bears used a big second half to defeat the Green Wave by 27 points in a Region 7-1A game.
“Best man to man defense team I’ve seen in a long time,” Green Wave head coach Peter Arnold said. “If you can score 60 points on them you’ve done something. Nobody will beat them in district.”
West Lincoln (14-7, 9-0) led Cathedral 21-13 at halftime before outscoring the Green Wave 22-11 in the third quarter to take a 43-24 lead and put the game out of reach. The Bears made sure there would be no comeback as they outscored Cathedral (11-13, 2-6) 19-11 in the fourth quarter.
Andy Lucas led Cathedral with 16 points and 13 rebounds while Juan Gray was held to 10 points, but he did pull down 11 rebounds.

TALLULAH, La. — Kaitlen Emfinger scored 17 of her game-high 19 points in the second half after teammate Mary Miller Ratcliff got into foul trouble as the Lady Chiefs moved into first place in District 7-A with a nine-point win over the Lady Trojans.
Emfinger also pulled down 14 rebounds for Tensas (10-16, 5-1). The Lady Chiefs got their offense clicking after halftime as they outscored Tallulah Academy 33-20 in the second half to erase a four-point halftime deficit.
Ratcliff scored 13 points in the first half, but with her foul problems she managed just two points in the second half. Mary Beth Givens scored 15 points and Anna Beth Book had 10 points for Tallulah, which has dropped two straight district games.

Venezia led WCCA (4-14) with 19 points while Norwood added 15 points and Davis chipped in with 12 points as the Rams jumped out to a 25-10 lead and Amite School Center never made a serious run to get back in the game.
Jessie Rymer finished with 11 points and Tyler Bean had 10 points to lead the Rebels, who did hold the Rams to nine points in the third quarter, but it was not enough.

LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. — Brandon Hawkins scored a game-high 34 points and Gary Stewart had 26 points as the Vikings nearly let a 14-point halftime lead slip away, but they held on for a two-point win over the Panthers in a District 4-2A game.
Vidalia (14-8, 2-1) outscored Lake Providence 28-14 in the second quarter to take a 44-30 lead at the half. But the Panthers cut into the lead during the third quarter and trailed by just six points as the fourth quarter began.
Lake Providence (2-15, 0-3) scored 30 points in the fourth quarter, but its defense allowed Vidalia to score 26 points and the Panthers’ rally fell a bit short. Lannoy Ellis led four Panthers in double figures with 19 points.

Kilbourne girls 45, Monterey 32
MONTEREY — After getting off to a good start and taking a 12-11 lead, the Lady Wolves went ice cold and scored just three points in the second quarter, allowing the Lady Hawks to take the lead for good in this District 3-B game.
Despite getting 15 points from Melissa Simpson and 10 points from Madison Simpson, Monterey (11-17, 0-3) could not recover from its second-quarter offensive woes. The Lady Wolves ended up trailing Kilbourne 23-15 at halftime.

MONTEREY— The Wolves couldn’t get into any rhythm on offense in the first half and the Hawks made them pay as they took a double-digit lead by halftime and rolled to a 30-point win in a District 3-B game.
House led Kilbourne (10-11, 2-1) with 16 points and Ashley had 10 points as the Hawks took a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 27-13 lead at halftime. They then scored 25 points in the third quarter to put the game completely out of reach.
