Two more Natchez High football players announced college commitments recently, only these two friends will now be sworn enemies.
Derrick McGee, a running back, and Desmond Smoot, a defensive back, each announced their college decision earlier this week, but they are heading to rival schools that also happen to be in the same city.
McGee committed to Henderson State, while Smoot is heading to Ouachita Baptist. Both schools are in Arkadelphia, Ark.
“(Henderson State’s) whole program (interested me),” McGee said. “I liked their coaches, I liked their facilities, I liked how they talked to me and I liked how they showed me Henderson State.”
“I liked the atmosphere (at Ouachita),” Smoot said. “The way the players treated me during my visit made me feel right at home.”
Each player has big plans for his college career. McGee plans to major in physical therapy, while Smoot will major in biology.
They’re also looking forward to becoming opponents rather than teammates.
“When I come around the corner he better watch out,” McGee said.
“He’s going to be scared the first time he sees me on the other side of the field,” Smoot said. “I’m going to be a lot bigger and stronger.”
Each plans to keep his grades up and work hard in the weight room in preparation for reporting to college in August.
The two are the second and third commitments to come from Natchez High this recruiting season, as Broderick Morgan committed to East Mississippi Community College this past weekend. Several more are expected before signing day, Feb. 7.
