Members of the On-the-Move 4-H Club gathered at the Volunteer Fire Department on Foster Mound Road Saturday to do a little sprucing up.

Volunteer Leader Hattie Harris said the group was more than happy to donate their time to making the fire department look better, since it’s the site of their monthly meetings.

“They let us use this fire department for our meetings because we didn’t have a meeting place. This whole thing was full of trash and leaves,” she said, motioning to the back patio.

“We also did some cleaning inside, like mopping and cleaning the toilets.”

Harris said there are about 20 members of the 4-H Club, including about 15 kids, who range in age from six to 14.

“I love working with children and teaching them the right way to go. 4-H Club is a great place for them to be to learn life lessons,” she said.

After mopping the floors, Danielle Alexander, 13, said although the work that the club does can be hard, it’s always rewarding.

“It makes me feel good because I know I’m helping someone who needs it and it’s a good thing to do,” she said.

Chalsie White, 11, said she always looks forward to the club’s visits to nursing homes.

“It lets you know when you get old people will want to help you because when you get old you will want someone to give you a helping hand, too.”

The club has many projects to look forward to in the upcoming months, including planting flowers, making Valentine’s Day gift baskets and collecting various items for those in need.
