Krra Stringer and Keosha Bradley led Natchez High on a second-half comeback after trailing Ferriday by six points at halftime as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Trojans 70-60 Tuesday night.

Ferriday head coach Lisa Abron contributed Natchez High’s win to the tempo of the game, which was fast-paced and eventually caused her team to wear down in the fourth quarter.

“Real good competition the first three quarters. The fourth quarter we completely ran out of gas on the offensive end. We couldn’t get anything to go in. They were in much better shape in the fourth quarter than we were.”

Natchez High (10-13) won the game by outscoring Ferriday 20-5 in that pivotal fourth quarter. Stringer and Bradley led the Lady Bulldogs with 21 points each.

The first two quarters were not only fast-paced, but also high scoring. Natchez High took a 22-19 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Ferriday responded by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 25-16 in the second quarter and took a 44-38 lead at halftime.

And perhaps the quick pace of the game started to show in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Trojans 12-11, yet still trailed by five points by the end of the quarter, 55-50.

“Our momentum started to fade a little bit,” Abron said. “Natchez kept that pace going and they never slowed up.”

Jasmine Butler led Ferriday (10-16) with a game-high 26 points and Jasmine Upchurch had 17 points before fouling out with under four minutes remaining in the game.

ST. JOSEPH — Mary Miller Ratcliff scored a game-high 21 points and Kaitlen Emfinger added 12 points as the Lady Chiefs defeated the Lady Rams by 24 points in an MPSA District 7-A game.

Tensas (12-17) led 11-5 after one quarter of play and then broke the game open by outscoring WCCA 15-5 in the second quarter for a 26-10 halftime lead.

Defense was also a key in the Lady Chiefs’ win as they allowed the Lady Rams to score no more than seven points in any of the four quarters.

Hannah Ashley scored six points and Kate Wilkerson had five points to lead WCCA.

With the win, Tensas ended up tied with Trinity at 6-2 in district play. Yet because the tiebreaker rule wasn’t settled before the season began, the Lady Chiefs and Lady Saints will have to play each other one more time, even though Tensas won both games during the regular season.

This time it will be a one-game playoff on a neutral court — Huntington — at 6 p.m. Thursday to determine not only which team will be the district champion, but also the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds out of District 7-A for next week’s Class A South State Tournament, which will also be at Huntington.

Jefferson County girls 68, Richland 34

RICHLAND — What a first quarter it was for the Lady Tigers. Not only did they score 24 points, they held the Lady Rangers scoreless en route to a 34-point win a Region 6-3A game.

Richland tried gallantly to get back in the game with a 17-11 advantage in the second quarter, but still trailed 35-17 at halftime. The Lady Tigers put the game out of reach by outscoring the Lady Rangers 25-9 in the fourth quarter.

Veronika Miller led Jefferson County with a game-high 26 points and Vanteska Williams had 13 points. Erin Hopkins led Richland with 10 points.

Huntington boys 92, Tallulah Academy 24

FERRIDAY — Antonio Jordan, Trey Corbett and Ricky Dunbar combined to score more than twice as many points as the Trojans had as a team as the Hounds, the No. 1 team in Class A, rolled to a 68-point win.

Huntington (23-5 overall) clinched the District 7-A championship and the No. 1 seed in next week’s Class A South State Tournament. The Hounds still have one more district game left – at Chamberlain-Hunt this Thursday.

Tallulah didn’t have a chance against the Hounds from the get-go. Huntington jumped out to a 28-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and by the time halftime had arrived, the Hounds led the Trojans 55-18. And if that wasn’t enough, Huntington outscored Tallulah 22-3 in the third quarter for a 77-21 lead.

Jordan led the way for the Hounds with 22 points while Corbett scored 17 points and Dunbar had 16 points. Joseph Scott led Tallulah with nine points.

Enterprise girls 46, Cathedral 30

NATCHEZ — Things looked promising for the Lady Green Wave after they had an 8-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Unfortunately, they could not stop Enterprise’s duo of Lindsey Everett and Lacey Orr, who combined for 33 points as the Lady Yellow Jackets rallied for a 16-point win in Region 7-1A action.

Everett finished with a game-high 17 points and Orr was close behind with 16 points for Enterprise, which took the lead for good in the second quarter and had a 14-11 lead at halftime. The Lady Yellow Jackets then put the game out of reach with an 18-6 advantage in the third quarter.

Alex Nickels led Cathedral (3-20, 1-8) with nine points. Kristian Dobard and Anna Huffines chipped in with seven points each.

Tallulah Academy girls 44, Huntington 39

FERRIDAY — The Lady Trojans looked like they were on their way to an easy win, but they had to hold on for the win after nearly letting a 12-point lead at halftime slip away.

Anna Beth Book finished with 20 points and Mary Beth Givens added 10 points for Tallulah, which finished in third place in District 7-A with a 4-4 record. But it wasn’t as easy as it ended up being as Huntington tried to rally in the second half.

The Lady Trojans controlled the action in the first half, resulting in an 11-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 30-18 lead by halftime.

Huntington, on the other hand, wouldn’t go away quietly. The Lady Hounds cut the lead to eight points with a 12-8 advantage in the third quarter. But the rally fell short as they were only able to cut three more points into the lead.

Huntington (6-21 overall) finished in fourth place in District 7-A with a 3-5 mark. Both Tallulah and Huntington will play in the Class A South State Tournament next week at Huntington.

Jefferson County boys 54, Richland 38

RICHLAND — Kadon Day led all scorers with 20 points, Joseph Kemp had 11 points and Percy Turner chipped in with 10 points as the Tigers defeated the Rangers on the road in a Region 6-3A game.

With the win, Jefferson County improved to 22-5 overall and clinched the No. 1 seed for next week’s Region 6-3A Tournament, which will take place at Richland, with a 10-2 record. While the tournament starts next Monday, the Tigers won’t have to play until next Thursday.

However, the outcome of the game was still in doubt after the Rangers outscored the Tigers 17-16 to trail by eight points at the end of the third quarter. The Tigers made sure the Rangers would get no closer with a 14-7 edge in the fourth quarter.

Eric Brown scored 14 points and Patrick Terrell had 12 points to lead Richland.

Franklin County girls 76, Tylertown 60

MEADVILLE — Shareka Hunt led all scorers with 27 points and Latonya Williams scored 18 points as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Chiefs in a Region 7-3A match-up.

Franklin County (18-5, 10-2) will be the No. 2 seed in the girls’ bracket in next week’s Region 7-3A Tournament. Fifth-ranked South Pike will be the top seed after going 11-1 in region play.

The Lady Bulldogs made sure that Tylertown (6-5 in Region 7-3A) would play catch-up as they outscored the Lady Chiefs by 11, 8, and 8 points in each of the first three quarters.

With most of Franklin County’s starters on the bench in the fourth quarter, Tylertown managed to make the final deficit more respectable with a 23-12 advantage. Octavia Bearden led the Lady Chiefs with 14 points.

Tioga girls 48, Vidalia 18

TIOGA, La. — Even though she was the only player to score in double figures, Kasheat Pender’s13 points led a balanced scoring attack as the Class 4A Lady Indians defeated the Lady Vikings.

Tioga took a 13-3 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back. Dejanae Harris led Vidalia with nine points.

Cathedral boys 64, Enterprise 42

NATCHEZ — Juan Gray ended up with a game-high 22 points, Andy Lucas added 14 points and Skylar Bacon had 12 points as the Green Wave used two big quarters to defeat the Yellow Jackets in Region 7-1A action.

The game was tied 8-8 after one quarter of play, but it didn’t take long for Cathedral’s offense to get going. The Green Wave put the game away by outscoring Enterprise 23-12 in the second quarter for a 31-20 lead at halftime.

And just for good measure, Cathedral (13-14, 4-7) continued its momentum by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 19-9 in the third quarter for a commanding 50-29 lead.

Natchez High boys 71, Ferriday 69

FERRIDAY — Just when it appeared that Ferriday was on its way to picking up a big win on its own court, the Bulldogs had other ideas as they outscored the Trojans 23-15 in the fourth quarter to escape with a dramatic two-point win.

Jason Bruce led Natchez High (8-15) with 28 points. DeShawn Griggs scored 19 points and Cameron Logan had 14 points.

Ferriday (13-13) had seized control of the game with a 20-10 advantage in the third quarter to turn a 38-34 halftime deficit into a 54-48 lead. That was until Natchez High rallied in the fourth quarter.

LaDerek Metcalfe led the Trojans with 17 points while Alrion McKeel had 15 points and Montrell Tennessee added 14 points.

WCCA 54, Tensas Academy 43

ST. JOSEPH — Trumaine Norwood scored 12 points to lead four WCCA players in double figures as the Rams defeated the Chiefs in a District 7-A game.

George Davis, Sean Venezia and Joseph Harvey had 10 points each for WCCA, which outscored Tensas (4-20, 2-9) 12-7 in both the second and third quarters to eventually pull away for the win.

Hunter Hale led the Chiefs with a game-high 19 points and Zack Jones chipped in with 11 points.

Tioga boys 70, Vidalia 56

TIOGA, La. — What was a close game for three quarters didn’t exactly finish that way as the Class 4A Indians outscored the Class 2A Vikings 22-9 in the fourth quarter to take a 14-point win.

Tioga only led by one point over Vidalia at the end of the first quarter and then trailed the Vikings 30-27 at halftime on its own home court. But the Indians answered by outscoring the Vikings 21-17 at the end of the third quarter for a 48-47 lead.

But instead of a down-to-the-wire finish, Tioga got off to a fast start in the fourth quarter to pull away from a pesky Vikings team. It also helped that the Indians had four players in double figures, led by Mel Smith with 24 points and Charles Clark with 18 points.

Brandon Hawkins led Vidalia (12-13) with 25 points, but he was the only Vikings player in double figures.
