Barbara Thompson

Services for Barbara Jean Bailey Thompson, of Red Lick, who died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at her residence, will be 1 p.m. today at Jefferson County High School Auditorium.

Mrs. Thompson was born Dec. 7, 1950, in Red Lick, the daughter of Rosie Hattix Green and Warneser Bailey.

Mrs. Thompson graduated from Liddell High School, in Fayette, in the Top Ten of her class in 1969. She was a member of the Lady Tigers basketball team under Coach Samuel Washington. She continued her education and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1987. In 1994, she received a Master of Science Degree with distinction in Secondary Education, Endorsement Area Business from Alcorn State University

She was employed as secretary for the City of Fayette under former Mayor Charles Evers. She was also employed at Alcorn State University as secretary for the School of Arts and Sciences from 1977-1979.

She worked another 21 years at ASU as Administrative Assistant/Office Manager under Dr. Norris Edney. Mrs. Thompson was a mentor to countless students in her capacity there and enjoyed the friendship and the camaraderie of the Alcorn family. She also was a mentor to and devoted fan of the Alcorn State University Lady Braves Basketball Team. She was a scorekeeper for many years until her health began to decline.

She was preceded in death by her father; maternal grandparents, Louis and Beatrice Hattix; paternal grandparents, Henry and Cora Bailey; her beloved daughter, Euretta Le”Quita” Mathews Washington; and a special cousin, Charles Wesby Sr.

Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Lewis Thompson of Red Lick; her mother, Rosie Hattix Green of Red Lick; brother, Louis Green Sr. and wife, Mary, of Red Lick; sister, Diane Green Brooks of Natchez; nephew, Louis Green Jr. of Red Lick; nieces, Jessica Green of Red Lick and Loren Price, also goddaughter, of Natchez; aunts, Veleria Wesby and husband, Monroe, of Chicago, and Etta Washington of Red Lick; great-aunt, Zula Carter of Akron, Ohio; a host of other family members and friends.
