The Cathedral Lady Green Wave split a pair of games Friday at the Grace Christian Tournament at the Alexandria Softball Complex, first defeating Family Christian 10-9 and then falling to St. Mary’s 12-9 in four innings.

In the first game, Cathedral overcame an up-and-down performance by eventual winning pitcher Kalin Kirkwood and held off a late rally to defeat the Lady Flames in five thrilling innings.

Kirkwood struck out eight batters, but she also walked 10 in four and a third innings. In the bottom of the fifth inning, she walked four batters in a row before being relieved.

Family Christian appeared to have control of the game early on after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. But Cathedral scored a run in each of the next two innings to tie the game at 3-3.

The Lady Green Wave was down 4-3 after three innings, but they weren’t down for long as they scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning and added what proved to be a big run in the top of the fifth to take a 10-4 lead.

Despite having just three hits in the game, Family Christian wouldn’t go away quietly. The Lady Flames scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth, but their rally fell a little bit short.

Ginny Daggett went 2-for-2 with a double and Zoie Arnold was 2-for-3 as part of Cathedral’s 10-hit attack.

The second game was supposed to pit Cathedral against St. Mary’s junior varsity team, but for some reason St. Mary’s head coach brought some of his varsity players with him.

Somehow, the Lady Tigers managed to win the game despite giving up 10 hits, including a home run by Kirkwood, who went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.

The big inning that propelled St. Mary’s of Natchitoches, La. was the bottom of the second, when it turned a 2-1 deficit into a 9-2 lead with eight runs. The Lady Tigers scored three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 12-3 lead.

Cathedral (3-6) scored six runs in the top of the fourth, but it was not enough. Betsy Daggett went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
