Vidalia Softball Tournament to finish today

After rain washed away the scheduled six remaining games Saturday, the Vidalia Softball Tournament will wrap up this afternoon with a shortened three-game schedule.
Vidalia will take on Harrisonburg at 2 p.m., followed by a Mangham-Rayville match-up at 3 p.m. The winner of that game will face Caldwell for the tournament championship at 4.
The Lady Vikings got in the last of the games played Saturday before the tournament was postponed, defeating LaSalle 6-1 on a wet field.
After the Lady Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, the first batch of rain forced the teams to the dugouts for approximately 15 minutes.
When the teams came back on the field, holding on to the ball became a problem for the Lady Tigers, as a series of wild pitches and passed balls aided the Lady Vikings in three more runs.
The Lady Tigers scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning before the game was called due to the time limit.
Brittany Whittington took the win on the mound for Vidalia, striking out three and walking two in four innings. She also got one of Vidalia’s four hits on the day.
Chelsea Warren batted 2-for-3, and Eryn Secrest had a double.
Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, the Vidalia defense played well on the day, and head coach Jeannie Hall said that was the difference in the game.
“I was very pleased with the defense,” she said. “And my pitcher played well. She was hitting her spots and her spins were working, which was a great thing because pitching’s the key. Our defense did tremendously better (than Friday),” she said.
In earlier action Saturday, Warren Central topped LaSalle 2-1 in extra innings, and Harrisonburg blasted Monterey, 10-2.
While high school sports on a Sunday may be a rarity, Hall said each team that elected to come back was happy to do so.
“The coaches agreed without hesitation (to finish today),” she said. “The teams that decided not to come back, I don’t think it was because of it being on a Sunday. Warren Central made the longest drive by far, and I don’t think they wanted to have to make that drive again with the expense of a bus driver.”
For the action today, no admission will be charged, but concessions will still be available.
