A combined two-hitter from Dustin Carroll and Brian Sanderson was enough to help ACCS get past Riverfield Tuesday afternoon.
Despite managing just five hits on the day and stranding six runners, Carroll did not allow a single base hit after the second inning, and Sanderson was perfect in relief to give the Rebels a 2-1 win.
“(Carroll) had to have the kind of day he had (for us to win),” ACCS head coach Ron Rushing said. “He pitched a great game. He threw strikes. I was pleased with the way he pitched.”
Carroll pitched five and one-third innings, allowing one run on a home run by Hunter Adcock in the top of the first inning. He struck out five and walked two. He also had a double from the plate.
With the Rebels (10-9, 4-3 district) clinging to their 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth, Carroll walked a Raider batter and then hit another, prompting Rushing to bring in Sanderson with runners on first and second and only one out.
Sanderson picked up the save, recording five straight outs to preserve the win.
Riverfield (10-10, 0-4) freshman pitcher Dakota Moss also pitched a strong game, going six innings and striking out one batter.
Austin Weeks was 2-for-3 on the day to lead the Rebels at the plate, driving in Sanderson for what would turn out to be the winning run in the bottom of the third.
Luke Brumfield scored on a throwing error by the Riverfield catcher to tie the game at one in the same inning.
Riverfield coach Donnie Foster said his team’s youth was a factor in the outcome.
“We’ve got six ninth-graders starting, and it showed at the plate,” he said. “We fielded well, we got a good game out of our pitcher, who is also a ninth-grader, we’ve just got to hit the ball.”
Even with the key district win, Rushing said he wasn’t happy with his team’s performance.
“This isn’t to take away from (Riverfield), but we weren’t ready to play when we walked down that hill today,” he said. “I was very disappointed with the way we came to play today.”
The Rebels and Raiders will meet again Friday in a doubleheader, this time in Rayville, beginning at 4 p.m.
