Cathedral upset by West Lincoln

Instead of going with Patrick McDonough or Preston Edwards, Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley decided to put Braxton Fondren on the mound for the Green Wave in the first round of the Region 7-1A Tournament Thursday night.

That proved to be the wrong move as West Lincoln lit Fondren up for seven runs on 14 hits, including a home run by Bears pitcher Tyler Case as the tournament’s No 4 seed upset the No. 1 seed at Chester Willis Field.

With the loss, Cathedral (17-5) dropped to the losers’ bracket and will take on No. 3 seed Enterprise, which lost to second-seeded St. Aloysius 5-2, today at 2 p.m. in an elimination game.

West Lincoln will take on St. Aloysius in a winners’ bracket game today at 4:30 p.m. The loser of that game will take on the winner of the Enterprise-Cathedral game today at 7 p.m.

Case was not only solid at the plate, but on the mound as well as he held Cathedral to just four hits. Two of them were by McDonough, including a double. The Green Wave fell behind 3-0 after two innings of play and were never in it.

Not even a late rally in the bottom of the seventh inning was enough to help Cathedral rally from a 7-0 deficit.

Matt Magee and Mott Boman also had three hits for West Lincoln while Nathaniel Pruski had two hits, including a double.
