A wreck late Wednesday night lead to a man’s death and a woman being hospitalized.
The accident happened at roughly 10:20 p.m.
A 1984 Ford pickup truck traveling east on State Street hit a fire hydrant, then hit a crepe myrtle and flipped over, Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said Thursday.
The wreck resulted in the death of the driver, Kelvin Fleming, 44, 309 Armstrong St., Mullins said.
Witnesses on State Street told police they heard a lot of engine noise, as if the driver were gunning the engine, Mullins said.
“As soon as the accident happened, neighbors came out,” Mullins said. “A fire had started, so they put it out with a garden hose. There was a lot of gasoline on the road.”
Fire department rescue personnel had to use the jaws-of-life to remove the man, Mullins said.
The passenger, Marion Eidt, 48, 10401 U.S. 61, Woodville, was transported to Natchez Regional Medical Center. Hospital officials said Thursday Eidt was no longer in their care.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Mullins said.
“A blood test will be done to determine if (alcohol) was a factor in the wreck,” he said. “Alcohol was found at the scene.”
