Third time the charm for St. Aloysius

After being swept by Cathedral in the regular season, St. Aloysius got even by defeating the Green Wave 5-3 Saturday afternoon at Chester Willis field to take the Distract 7-1A baseball tournament title and playoff home field advantage.
The No. 2 seeded Flashes played tough defense and capitalized on top seeded Cathedral miscues to score five runs off eight hits and five Green Wave errors.
“We were outplayed defensively. That’s where they beat us,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “They made some outstanding plays.”
“Every time we play them, we know it’s going to be a good game. We got some breaks our way, and our guys played hard,” St. Aloysius head coach Mitch Wilkerson said.
St. Aloysius jumped ahead early in the first inning after Ryno Martin-Nez and Jordan Muirhead both hit triples to score runs, and a sacrifice hit by Marsh Willis put the Flashes up 3-0 over Cathedral.
“They jumped on Patrick early, but he settled down and did a good job,” Beesley said.
Tough pitching by Martin-Nez stymied the Green Wave in the first two innings at the plate, but Cathedral pitcher Patrick McDonough changed that when he launched a two-run shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Flashes’ lead to one. Cathedral then tied the game in the bottom of the next inning when Caleb Johnson’s triple drove in Preston Edwards.
But the Flashes scored a run in the top of the fifth inning to regain the lead, and added a little insurance in the top of the seventh when Muirhead stole home plate with the bases loaded.
“My guys played hard and I am proud of them. We are going to cherish this district tournament championship, then go back to work on Monday and start preparing for the playoffs,” Wilkerson said.
The Green Wave will begin their playoff preparations as well, as they will travel to take on Lake High School on Thursday. Cathedral defeated Lake in three games during the playoffs last season.
