Trinity avenges loss to WCCA

Led by a solid performance at the plate by Parker Brumfield and a strong outing on the mound by Matt Barnes, the Trinity Episcopal Saints defeated the WCCA Rams 7-2 Tuesday night at Chester Willis Field.
In what was an important MPSA District 7-A game with playoff implications for both teams, the Saints got the job done and clinched a playoff spot. Trinity (11-10 overall) finished district play with a 6-2 record.
However, there is still the possibility that the Rams, now out of the playoff hunt with four district losses, could defeat Huntington Thursday night at WCCA and give the Hounds their second district loss. That would mean a one-game playoff between Trinity and Huntington for the district championship.
The Rams almost put a dent in the Saints’ run to the playoffs late in the game after scoring two runs off Barnes, both unearned, in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score at 2-2.
Barnes went all seven innings for Trinity as he allowed just three hits, struck out one – the last batter he faced, walked one and hit one batter. Two of WCCA’s three hits were by Colin Dore’, who was 2-for-3.
But the Saints would not be denied on this night as they scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Brumfield led Trinity six-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a double.
