Cletus McCurley

GLOSTER — Services for Cletus Eldred McCurley, 94, of Gloster, who died Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow at Roseland Cemetery, in Gloster, under the direction of Brown Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. McCurley was born July 17, 1912, in Stephenson, which is now Crosby, the son of Thomas B. McCurley and Dora Baker McCurley. He attended Southwest Junior College for one semester. During World War II he served as commander of a weapons repair unit which supported General Patton’s drive through France and into Germany. After the war he replaced his father as a senior manager of Crosby Lumber and Manufacturing Company in Crosby. Prior to his retirement in 1977 he was employed by St. Regis Paper Company after their purchase of Crosby Lumber. After retirement he moved from Crosby to Gloster. He was a member of Galilee First Baptist Church in Gloster. Mr. Clete was a dedicated member of Pine Hills Country Club, in Gloster, where he played golf. He was instrumental in introducing many people to the game as well as the art of club-making and repair.

He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers and sisters; and his wife, Nella Lee McCurley, of 66 years; nephews, William C. McCurley of Pittsburgh, the Rev. Tom McCurley of Nashville, Tenn., and Donald E. Walsh of Woodville.

Survivors include his nieces and nephews, Nellie Wren McCurley Foreman of Bastrop, Joyce McCurley Klespies of Port Arthur, Texas, James M. McCurley and wife, Carole, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Dora Marquez Etheridge and husband, W. T. “Sonny” both of Warner Robins, Ga., Dorothea McCurley Hoffman and husband, David, and Dr. Dunbar McCurley and wife, Mary Ann, all of Woodville, and Justin J. Marquez and wife, Linda, of Houston, Texas; niece-in-law, Nancy Walsh of Woodville; and numerous grandnieces, nephews and friends.
