Jefferson college looking for pioneers

We still have space available for your child or grandchild to participate in the 20th annual Pioneer Week: The Way It Was at Historic Jefferson College.

From Monday, June 4 through Friday, June 8 children ages 8 to 12 will have the opportunity to learn what life was like in the early days of Mississippi at this summer day camp. Children attending Pioneer Week will not only be exposed to Mississippi history where it occurred but will also experience aspects of the daily life of early Mississippians by trying their hand at various activities. Some of the activities included in the 20th year of the program are visiting a frontier campsite, weaving on a loom, making clay pottery, making butter and lye soap, learning archery, old-time fishing, old fashioned toys and games including Rounders, a predecessor to today’s baseball, listening to fiddle music and making arts and crafts. The pioneers will also learn how the settlers adapted and used Native American ways to survive in their new surroundings.

With the help of many volunteers, Historic Jefferson College has created a fun and educational experience for children in our area. And what better place to learn about our history than on the historic grounds of Jefferson College? Located just a few miles from Natchez on 80 acres of beautiful grounds and woods, Jefferson College was prominent in Mississippi’s early history and welcomed many of the areas early residents and travelers. The Pioneer Week activities will take place both inside the historic buildings and on the grounds. Refreshments will be served daily.
