After several months of deliberation, Natchez High quarterback Jason Bruce has decided he will continue his playing career at Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
Bruce said he made his decision to attend Co-Lin at the beginning of April. Prior to his decision he said he was on the fence between the Wolves and Alcorn State University.
“I signed a scholarship with both Alcorn and Co-Lin because I was unsure at the time of what I wanted to do,” he said.
But after some thought and some guidance from his mother Sandra, Bruce said the choice was clear.
“After talking things over with my mother and weighing my options, I thought I had a better chance at a bigger scholarship, like what I wanted out of high school, if I went to junior college first,” he said. “So I chose Co-Lin.”
Bruce also said he would have been red shirted at Alcorn, but at Co-Lin, would have an immediate opportunity to start at the quarterback and wide receiver position.
Since making his decision, Bruce has already made plans to get start working with the team. On June 25, he will leave for Wesson campus to begin summer school and start working out with his new teammates.
“I want to get in the system early, get familiar with my surroundings and campus, and start working out with some of the older players so I can get a feel for them,” Bruce said.
Bruce said he was aware of the winning program that the Wolves’ football program has, which is ranked 26th in the first national JUCO poll, and added that only makes his personal expectations higher.
“I have high expectations knowing they went to a bowl game last year, and had a chance to win a championship. When I get there I want to be the man that helps them win that championship,” he said. “It does not add to the pressure because I know there will be a lot of people from Natchez there to support me.”
While at Co-Lin, Bruce will not limit his athletic ability to just the football field. In high school Bruce also played point guard for the Bulldogs basketball team, and he said if the opportunity to lace up and take the court for the Wolves basketball team arose, he would take it.
“I have yet to talk to their basketball coach, so I will have to wait and see. But If I get the chance to walk on, then I will walk on,” he said.
Outside the world of athletics, Bruce’s studies will be aimed at a career that is sports related since much of his life’s experiences have revolved around sports. He said he set nothing completely in stone about his major at this time, and plans to take things as they come.
But Bruce was quick to say that he would not be in the position in he is now without the help and guidance of his mother, the Natchez High coaching staff and his best friend, Edward Johnson.
