Cothren, Matthews and Edgin win golf tourney

The team of David Cothren, Tom Matthews and Richard Edgin had eagles on three of the four par-5 holes in their round, but it was the last one they had that counted the most.
After Cothren’s second shot from the left side of the fairway ended up rolling to the middle of the green, Matthews sank the eagle putt from about 15 feet as the trio ended up with a round of 15-under-par 57 to win the fifth annual Boys & Girls Club Celebrity Golf Tournament Friday afternoon at Beau Pré Country Club.
“We all played good. We all made putts,” Cothren said. “We struggled on the par-3s. We only had one birdie. Richard hit some long drives. We had a good match with Christian Krueger, Jason Rooks and Wesley Rogers.”
Both of those three-man teams started on No. 1 and it was a battle most of the way. The Krueger-Rooks-Rogers team made a birdie putt on No. 13 to get within one shot of the lead. After they made a birdie putt on No. 16, the Cothren-Matthews-Edgin made a key birdie putt on the same hole to keep its lead.
“We had to make a 12-footer with a six or seven-inch break in it,” Cothren said. “We knew we had to beat them.”
While Krueger, Rooks and Rogers, who finished with 11 birdies and an eagle on No. 8, had to settle for a birdie on 18, the eventual winning team of Cothren, Matthews and Edgin, who had nine birdie and eagles on 5, 10 and 18, went into the clubhouse with a two-shot lead — and then both teams had to wait to see what the other teams would do.
The team of Phillip West, Akeem West and Dan Bland had 13 birdies in its round of 59. At first, the team of Kirk Mullins, Brandon Henry, Dan Thibodeaux and Mike Morgan finished second on a scorecard play
“We played pretty well. We could’ve done a little better,” Phillip West said. “We shot the same score we did last year.”
Then in a scorecard playoff, the team of Phillip West, Akeem West and Bland finished second while the team of Krueger, Rooks and Rogers had to settle for third place.
The West-West-Land team originally finished third in a scorecard playoff and the Krueger-Rooks-Rogers team finished fourth. That’s because when play was completed there were three teams that had rounds of 59.
The other one was the team of Kirk Mullins, Brandon Henry, Dan Thibodeaux and Mike Morgan. At first, that team finished in second place on the scorecard playoff. Later on, that turned out not to be the case as they were disqualified for unknown reasons.
All proceeds from this tournament, which is sponsored by Everett Sanders, Thomas “Boo” Campbell, Tommy O’Beirne and Phillip C. West, go to the Boys & Girls Club of the Miss-Lou, West said.
“We averaged over $10,000 over each of the last four year. I don’t think we’ll make it this year, but we’ll do okay. We didn’t do as much marketing as we have. One year we had 90 players. We’ve never had less than 60 players.”
This year, there were 72 players in the field. There were 22 three-man teams, one four-man team and one two-man team.
One of the last teams to finish play was the team of Robin Punches, Chris Kelley and Bobby Meason, which finished in fourth place with a round of 12-under-par 60. Punches, Kelley and Meason had 12 birdies and six pars in their round.
“We made no long putts. We had a lot of fun, though,” Meason said. “It’s for a good cause. Chris Kelley hits the ball farther than any lawyer I’ve ever seen in my life.”
